How it is better to photograph a picture?

What’s the best way to photograph a picture?
We will help you to achieve the greatest possible quality in your house lighting conditions.
General recommendations
I’d suggest using a tripod with your digital camera to make sure that you’re taking perfectly steady shots. No tripod? - No problem.  A box or a chair will work just fine as well. The important thing is to shoot with some kind of support.
The camera should be leveled precisely on the center of a picture and necessarily strictly perpendicularly to the surface of a picture. Otherwise the picture will become a trapeze.
Wrong position of the camera

In the given picture the objective of the camera is directed to the center of a picture, but is not perpendicular to it’s planes. As a result, on a picture on the right you see that in a photo the picture has got a trapezoidal shape.
Correct position of the camera

Here the camera is established correctly (which means - strictly perpendicularly to the planes of a picture), and in a picture on the right you see, that the photo of a picture has turned out having the correct shape, without the distortions.
It is better to take a picture in daylight since usual inside lighting gives a yellow tone. That’s why you take your paintings outside (on a balcony or a deck). But keep in mind, that on a balcony (or a deck) illumination is not even, and light usually goes on the one side. Therefore it is desirable to put a large plain piece of paper sideways from a picture. Daylight will be reflected from it and will create additional illumination for a picture. As a result - the general illumination will be more appropriate.

In a picture on the left the left side of a picture was turned to a window – it is lighted brightly, and the right side - is not lightened enough. In a picture on the right you see, that, having substituted a small leaf of a white paper, we have leveled illumination of the right side of a picture.
Ideal  light situation – in the afternoon, outside, in cloudy weather.
Light should not fall from the photographer’s side. It is better, if light will be sideways - then from a picture "patches of light" will not be reflected.
Do not use the flash built in the camera – it will give a strong flare.
It is desirable, that opposite to a picture there is nothing bright since it too can be reflected. For example, a white shirt of the photographer or a silvery support. (You can cover them with a dark fabric).
Do not use mobile phones, use “human being” cameras.
It is OK, to leave a place around  a picture. "Unnecessary space" will be possible to cut off easily in the graphic editor.

So much for art. How about the artist?

I was born in Russia in 1957, and I've been trying both hands (I'm ambidextrous) at art ever since. I can remember my self from the age of two, and when I was three, I was the terror of my mother's make-up kit, as I loved to draw murals on the wallpaper with her lipstick. All through my childhood I continued drawing, (more...)
