The animal and wildlife board concentrates on graphite drawings of all animals, from domestic pets to wildlife - anything dressed in fur or feathers...or scales.
Welcome to the Animal and Wildlife Drawing Forum, which is based on the drawing and painting of all animals from domestic pets to wildlife - anything dressed in fur or feathers...or scales. But don't let that stop you posting artwork that is not animal-related if you feel this is the forum that...
I have built a database of free photo references for artists on my website. There is a good mix of catagories, wildlife, western, horses, domestic, sunsets, scenery, water, birds, cars, heritage, buildings, zoo etc. So hopefully a little something for everyone. Here's the link....
Fourth term class starts tomorrow night - and they have requested we discuss composition. As I am often asked here on this forum about this subject, I thought you wouldn't mind too much if I copied my introduction document... then we could go from there. As I will be demonstrating on a chalk boaard...
I know this is off message but I hope nobody minds me posting this in the animals section, it is where I feel most at home. I wondered if any of you have had any experience with using an Artists Agent, if so, do you think its a good idea, how does one get to find one and I guess, most important,...
I've been so busy organising the Canadian and US tours that I've been neglecting the UK... sorry  We now have confirmed dates. Venue: Sawley Village Hall - in the North Yorkshire countryside close to Fountains Abbey world heritage site and the little city of Ripon. MAY 15-16...
We've been working hard and planning furiously (still are!) and so far we have TWO workshops now taking bookings and two more being planned: All are 3-day, Friday-Sunday: CA - Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn - September 10-12 (booking now) CA - Concord - Hilton Concord - September 17-19...
Early days - still a lot of planning to do but I will be in CANADA next year - in MAY/JUNE. So far we're planning workshops in: CALGARY, Alberta - May 28-30 OTTAWA, Ontario - May 21-23 or June 4-6 and VANCOUVER has just been suggested and I'm following up on that.
OK, I have read as much of the advice on here as I can find and piece together. I need a little more input to fill in some gaps if ya'll don't mind. Some of these may be pretty elementary, so please bear with me. First of all, when you advertise a pic, do you list the size as the size of the...
I have the first draft of the multi-part scan tutorial completed. It's not comprehensive but it gives you a walk through of the basics. Let me know if the tutorial is useful or if misses some of the things that are frustrating. http://www.richadamsphoto.com/Tutorials/PST/Frameset.html I...
I saw Mike's explanation of artists proofs in another thread and decided to start this thread. What are the types of prints that are typically sold and how does that work? Maybe this isn't the forum for this question, but I don't know where else to go! Robert If you have any information on...
Hi, well I gave a Beagle a try, I am a lot happier with this one. still having problems with white fur, this is on Bristol smooth, and 2B,HB, 2H, and a little 6B to use to darken but I think I should have stayed with 2B and layered.and should I add more layers for the fur? anyway C&C are welcome....
I am going to try another horses running painting but going to start slower and try to improve each step. I layed out a couple of compositions can you let me know which of these if either one of them is better...or what would make it better. I had one with more horses but think less is better The...
My newest project. I started as a quiz for you. I've only sketched the eyes, now you can follow the Wip and guess what will it be. The left eye is done. David
It was only a matter of time before the graphite bug struck again....it has been a long time since I last did a graphite drawing. This one is of an Elephant cow and her calf in protective mode, not yet thought of a suitable title for it. Sorry about the awful scan will try and do better next...
Hi all! Another drawing similar to the Bald Eagle drawing I did a couple of years ago. LOTS of branches and tree bark. It will take awhile, but, eventually, a "Barred Owl" will appear on the right side of the drawing. Definitely another eye buster. If my eyes survive this drawing, I will be...
Well, I haven't got around to the dogs yet. I follow the advice from Mikes book, and start on one item/texture at a time + start with the background :10000000: So far I am drawing stones.... old walls with ... these stones ... I don't know what you call them in english?? The wall and an old...
Hello everyone! As you can see I'm new here. I was directed here from a member of another forum and I've been lurking for a while now, apprehensive to post after seeing such amazing talent, but I've decided to just jump in. I'll start with my most recently finished piece, a couple of deceased...
After sorting through my odds and ends of papers over the weekend I found some old sheets of velour which I haven't used for many years. I was inspired to use it again after seeing some work done on it a couple of days ago. So here is my Zebra. At first I wasn't sure about the background. It...

This is approx 12 x 10, graphite on mellotex. I'm waiting to find out if it gets juried in to the NEWA exhibition. Gayle
I haven't picked up a pencil in a couple months and before that I was doing another in my Civil War series so I wanted to do something in my comfort zone. I didn't have a photo of either of my cats that I wanted to do so I had to take more. Casper tends to make funny faces when I am behind the lens...
Well, just started this one, but I may abandon it, the paper is not right for what I want...I will persevere for a while and see how it goes. The paper is Somerset Velvet for pastels in a light stone colour, but is too textured for me. I am using pastels and tinted charcoal pencils. I should have...
Hello Just to tell why I haven't been around much lately: I started a commission of a newly deceased papillon. Cute dog, bad ref-photos (especially the one the owner preferred, and I regretfully accepted) and a client I don't understand. The worst I ever had.. Well it is a long story, with a...
Time for a new composition... this time a red squirrel. The ones we have here in the U.S. are different from the ones with the same name in Britain. Along with the northern flying squirrel, the red squirrel is the most widespread native "squirrel" in Montana, meaning that they're not a ground...
I'm working on my first personal drawing in over 14 months! I've been working on two major projects and doing a lot of traveling, sketching, and photography. I dug out some old reference photos I took in Glacier National Park two years ago and am about to start on this moose study. Okay, here...

Hi all, well it has been awhile since I have posted anything, not that I have not tried just did not produce anything I wanted to put on here. but I did give another Lion a try. I am not happy with the ear or the nose area but this paper will only let you erase so much before it just cant be fixed...
I did a cat and a pug I never posted on here. as for the Cat I did, I really like the eyes but I could never get around the mouth to look right. so any ideas on how to get that to look better would help, then the pug, ugh...he is what he is... just went into the drawer. But I will not give up. I...
Back to the head studies to get ready for a couple dog shows I'll attend this summer. (The tree and well have gone back in the closet until next winter...someday I'll finish it!) I thought I'd try to get some practice with the graphitint on these. I'm still trying to setting on a style and...
First 'non cat' for a long time. This is watercolour on Fabriano Artistico Extra White watercolour paper, approx 12 x 14. The background is the white of the paper, the shadows are from the light when I took the photograph. I'm undecided about adding the vertical branch to the left and I have...
Oops... computer glitch, ended up posting this twice... :32000000:
I thought I would ask this here, and see if anyone can help. Our local fair is coming up soon, and I've been working on a portrait of John Wayne, with horses running at the bottom. In the rules for the fairs Art Dept., it doesn't say anything about an artist's work having to be from their own...
Hi All, I desperatly needed an outlet here in Ruston, LA because my studio is back home in houston. So I went to the local bookstore here at LA tech University. Oil and hard pastels were the only medium available. So I am posting my first experience with Op's. I would love to here what you think...

A commemorative portrait of a dearly loved old girl. I wish it were better but I already have way too much time into it for the price I'm afraid. At least I feel like I learned a little something with this picture. 2B, HB, 6H, 7H on Mello-tex super white.
Here is my latest work in progress, this time a scratchboard featuring three wolf pups. This thread is a bit image-heavy, for which I apologize! The board is 8.5x20 inches and I have included a penny in one of the WIP's for size reference. All my work is done using a box cutter, also shown in one...
Been working this weekend, so needed some motivation :)
Hi all. A long time since i've posted i know, and i have no new work as i've been sooo lazy lately and cant seem to get back into it. But anyway for now i'm looking for some advice... I would like to sell my drawings as prints on a stall (maybe this Christmas) but i dont know if i have...
My latest commission is Otis a yorkie x border terrier and a real character. He belongs to my friends (Kali's mum) daughter. She saw the one I did of Kali and wanted one if her own little dog....well it's really for her hubbies birthday really. Taking a long time, I have got over involved in the...

With the sad and terrible oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, wildlife is again suffering as well as the people and fisherman. I decided to draw one of the Brown Pelicans in Graphite and Charcoal. I don't usually draw birds but this crisis has inspired me to capture this magnificent bird. The surface...
A friend of mine lost her older Maltese boy and wanted a painting of him, the ref photos were tiny so had to use my guys for details. Also I didn't want to go with the traditional flat black back ground. Here is what I have so far. All C&C welcome. I am going between paintings right now and it...

I have been doing this to keep me busy during an exhibition which I and two other friends had during the last week. I am posting it to make sure that I finish it as I am completely demotivated at the moment. Lots of people through, lots of very nice comments, but no sales for any of us. Not sure...
This is my current commission. A local lady is commissioning me for relatives who live in France so this painting will be going there once done. The subjects are two Border Collies. A smoothie called Beau and a roughie called Monty. I had to give the owners photography lessons by email to get...
It's been so long (several years) since I drew anything other than a doodle that I've forgotten how to render whiskers? I started a drawing of a tigers head, never expecting to get any further than the outline, but now I've got stuck in and started to really enjoy it. The problem is, the...
Hi This little kitten and a dalmatian portrait (in graphite) are the reasons why my Irish wolfhounds are on hold :40000000: The kitten is in pastels on velourpaper, approx. 24 x 34 cm. The kitten itself is from my archives of photos of my own kittens. I don't remember what she was really...
Hey, well here is my latest one, a Squirrel, when I came across this reference picture I thought of my squirrel that I hand raised 10 years ago, I was working for a Vet and someone brought in this baby squirrel her eyes were not even open yet so I took her home .she would live in my shirt or...

Okay, I know this is a drawing forum, not political activism. But I feel strongly about this issue. And we are all artists who love drawing animals - and I think most of us wish that animals remain on the earth with us. I understand cultural/indigenous hunting of these animals and can live with...
