"Jewel"

Hi everyone, after browsing these forums for a while I finally decided to post my work. I started this portrait of Jewel a few months ago and finished it, but wasn't completely satisfied with it. Then I discovered these forums and saw everyone elsés work and it put me to shame. Everyone here is so wonderfully talented and amazing. I started the drawing again, this time on smoother paper, and really took my time on it, paying attention to every detail very critically. I'm still not satisfied with it but this is as far as I got. My main complaint is that the eye on the left is too far away from the nose, but I feel it's too far along to fix that now. Also I'd like to work some more detail into the hair and the skirt of the dress.

ps. I have other works that I'd like to post here if that is alright.

Welcome! Thank you for posting this! It's beautiful! I love the softness of it. A lot of people like to draw very photo realistically with the outcome looking exactly like the photo. This portrait of yours definitely looks like her but you kept it in your own style! I think that is so important!

I would love to see more of your work!

Thank you

Thank you so much dhesse! Truthfully, I was nervous about posting my work, all the talent on this forum is intimidating. Like you said, while I admire the ultra-smooth, photorealistic styles of Lee Hammond and others, I like a sketchier, rougher look for my own work. I use textured sketch paper a lot. I feel it gives character. Here are a few I consider my best. (The first one is from early 2000, when I was 14) (And the last one is a monochrome watercolor portrait; I just got into watercolors, I love the fluid look, unfortunately a lot of quality is lost in the resizing process)

wow, these are awesome, especially the girl from semiprofile and the watercolor one. Watercolor is difficult to control and I admire the people who use it with great skill, like you did on this portrait.

Jewel portrait is really good and I love the style, the only thing I'd recommend is to make the darkest areas such as the mouth line darker than that, which will emphasize the contrast.

I wish I could do rougher, sketchier portraits but I get into the details so deeply I can never manage it. What sort of paper and pencils did you use for the jewel portrait?

The first and last are my favorite! You have a great style! I am not sure how you draw, if you use a graph, but the only thing I can recommend is make sure you have an accurate sketch first. I think your drawings will be even more powerful once you master dimensions and perspective, keeping the same style of course!!!

Very, very well done!!!

Keep drawing and posting!

Thank you

For the Jewel I just used plain printing paper, its the smoothest I have, although not very professional, I know. And random pencils, mostly regular pencils I find around the house. #2, #3, different brands have different textures and darkness. I've tried drawing pencils and I didn't really like them, maybe it was just the brands I've been using. There was one that I loved called Ebony Jet Black Extra Smooth or something like that. And I use plain paper stumps to blend. I hadn't realized how time-consuming it is because it used to take me only a day to do a portrait on the sketching paper. That texture makes everything easier, the blending, the textured areas, etc. but on smoother paper I found I had to really work on every little detail and couldn't just rub the stump all over an area because it would look uneven. So the Jewel took me weeks. And discipline! Thank you for the suggestions, I noticed that about the darkess too, I'm going to work on it now.
