Here's my most recent drawing of my son. I actually was finishing it just as I was joining this forum, and before my discovering the magic of the chamois. The typical pattern for me for my drawings was to put in several layers in pencil and slightly blend with tortillon in the later stages. I have Lee Hammond's book which I like, but find some of her stuff looks almost over-blended, so I tried to stay away from that exact look, and put in lots of pencil strokes. I really like a lot of what you guys are doing with blending to establish your tones and then adding texture on top of that. That's what I've been working on lately, and hopefully will be able to post something in the near future where I've used some of your tips. I notice you guys don't use many backgrounds. I like them in certain drawings. I don't always do it, but let me know what you think.

Welcome to the board Jay. I can see you got a nice tone in here, your background did help on giving highlights on the hair and the face which I like. Keep it up Jay. God bless.

Jay this drawing is awesome.... you really captured his expression very well.
He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist. St Fancis of Assisi

Hi Jay, this portrait of your son looks fantastic! I completely understand what you mean about a darker background. Although I do wonder what this same pic would look like if you went ahead and continued with the same background extended all the way to the edges. When I look at your work, my eyes are drawn to the innocence in his face, but then become somewhat "Distracted" by the cross-hatched background. Of course I also realize what a pain it is to fill in all that dark background. Lol! Cheers! R.C. Dominguez
