"Help with clothing"

Hello all

This a WIP and I am having difficulty drawing the guy's shirt. It's that shiny, nylon material. Any suggestions on how to achieve a realistic rendering?

I haven't done much to it yet, just starting.

Thank you

holy smokes DH,thats lookin VERY nice,..i dont know what to say about the shirt cause i dont see anything wrong with it.
i really like the detail that you have on the ear especially,....that looks like sort of a hard pic to work from,i dont think i could draw very good from that photo,.....are you using a graph?..or is that all free hand?

I haven't drawn a shirt in this material so I can't help there......you are doing a great job..... I'm looking forward to seeing this one finished

Thanks absolute and Bella. I have such an old scanner it always makes my drawings look so grainy.

Anyway, I have an unusual way of drawing. I don't use a graph. I use a ruler and measure everything. I do a quick sketch the size that I am planning to draw and then measure out on the good paper where the nose should go. I don't know why but I usually draw the nose first, (sometimes I'll start with the eyes). Then measure all the other features from there. I very lightly sketch on the good paper the location of other features and get into more detail when I start rendering it.

I know, it's very strange and highly unusual but it's how I have been drawing since I was a kid. I find that if I use a numeric method I get things a lot more accurate than if I use a graph.

Maybe I would draw better if I used the "normal" way.

Back to the drawing table....

Thank you

I like too the drawing very much so far! interesting to know about that measuring method you use.

About the shirt: What pencils are you using? IMHO, I would use here quite hard pencils first, maybe HB-2F. Lots of layers and blending to make it look slick, still avoiding to make edges too sharp and dark in the shadows during layering

Hey D. Great job so far! I agree with matti. Lots of layering, I think you will be drawing just as much with a kneaded eraser as a pencil.

I wouldn't spread the highlight so much it looks to abrupt between highlight and shadow it looks like it needs to roll a little more. It might be the scan though, I can't tell.

Are you going to draw all the little holes in the jersey?

Here is an update. I think I might have made the girl's face too chubby. Any thoughts?

I think the piece is coming along nicely. Your reference photo is a hard one to work from, though. I find that when the reference photo has a dominant single-flash photo from the front, the features appear flattened. Your piece looks better than the photo. Keep it up.

Thanks JT! Yes, I need to be a little more adamant about the type of pics I am willing to draw. I am getting a new digital camera at the end of the month (yipppeee) and I am going to start taking my own pics to draw!!!

Wooowww!! Amazing...

Could I ask you what type of paper you use? I am totally learning so much. I love the texture of the skin in your drawings. It's so special.

Thank you for posting your beautiful art!

Linda

Thanks Linda for your wonderful comments! I really appreciate it! I usually use Arches 140 cold press or watercolor paper. I have only recently been able to achieve the smooth blending thanks to all the helpful folks on ArtPapa! The key is a chamois and layering. Start light and build up the tone.

Thank you
