"Another piece, finally...."

Hi again everyone. This is a drawing I did for my boss for her birthday. (I'm giving it to her tomorrow...I'll let you know how that goes!) She's a good boss obviously. I'm sad to let it go. Unfortunately I won't have any time to change anything by your suggestions, but I'd still like some critique if you don't mind so I know what to work on for my next one. This is also the first dog I've ever drawn.

The original size is 11x14. I used HB, 2B, and 6B pencils, blending stump, tortillon, and chamois. It took about 9 hours to complete, maybe 10.

By the way, I used the advice of using a piece of glass between the drawing and the scanner, and it seemed to help with picking up some lighter shades. It still lost a bit of tone, but definitely not nearly as bad as my other pieces did! I did have to size it down a lot though, how do you guys get such big pictures into the forum with the 70kb limit?

I'll stop babbling, thanks for looking.

Beth

Picture looks great. Good job.

I still have yet to try a dog. I will probably do a picture of my dog soon as I finish the other pictures Im working on.

Is there a 70kb limit? I think that is for files that are uploaded.

All my pictures are just a linked image from my website so they are usually around 100-150kb. But the message just pulls the image into the post from my webpage.

Hi Beth,

Nice job, I love portraits that are away from the normal standard pose and this one is wonderful. I most certainly hope you get a raise after this, you certainly deserve it

p.s. Which one is your boss ?

Yes, very nice piece Beth, I'm sure she'll love it!! I also wonder how everyone gets under the 70kb limit. I think I've been blocked from posting any images as my first few were well over the limit. Bummer. Anyone else had this happen to them?? What have you got planned next?? Take care....

Beth! This drawing is excellent! Only 9 hours? I am in awe. I can barely get my pencil sharpened in 9 hours. You have also elevated sucking up to the boss to an art form as well. Very nice.

As far as the 70kB limit, this is what I do:

I always do my scans at 300dpi and save as a grayscale TIF file so that I will have a suitable file for printing (the TIF file format is lossless). I always keep this file as my original master. Then I re-sample the image to 72 dpi in Photoshop (this matches the resolution of the screen - VERY important step). Then, if you use Photoshop, use the "Save for Web" feature and choose the JPG format. You can easily adjust the quality setting to get the file size you want with almost no noticeable image degradation. This really works quite well. If you don't have photoshop, just save the 72 dpi image as a jpeg using whatever photo editing program you have. There will be a way to set the quality (or compression) of the new file that will accomplish basically the same thing I described in photoshop. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, just send me an email.

Is the 70kb Limit for uploading pictures to here to show up?

I use direct image linking from my webpage so I dont think that counts as the 70kb limit so my pictures are always above 100kb.

Thanks, Bill! I am going to try your method this weekend on some previous works. I don't think I ever would have had the patience to figure that out on my own. And I even have photoshop, yay!

And as dense as it sounds, I didn't even think of linking to images on my website, duh! I think I'll do that as well!

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I'll post this afternoon how the "presentation" to the boss goes...(cross your fingers for me, it's going to be in front of EVERYONE!)

By the way...I'm not usually such a suck up...but I'm campaigning for 6 months of leave after my baby is born!
