"Ringwraiths-WIP"

This is the Nazgul (ringwraiths) from LOTR. I'm drawingthis from a movie screen capture, however, I'm changing things a bit since I don't like copying down movie caps.

One problem I have is, that the paper's tooth sort of shows very tiny white dots when I use soft pencils such as 4b and 6b. This is 2 ply bristol. It looks a lot more smoother with harder pencils. What do you guys recommend?

Oh well, filling them in with a sharp and harder pencil then blending with stump eliminates this mostly. Anyway here is the latest update, the background texture is mostly my imagination since I didn't like the rocks and dead weeds on the original pic so I;m making it up.

Ooooh scary...
I did the same thing as you, a 2H underneath the darker pencil made a smoother base.

This is a totally cool picture! Please keep posting your progress.

I rarely ever use softer than 2B, and I draw exclusively on Bristol. I can get as dark as necessary with no problem using a sharp 2B lead. The only caution here is that you have to be careful not to overwork the paper by applying too many layers (or digging into it with a too sharp point). I have a bad tendency to do this.

Keep up the good work.

Bill

Toby, I use smooth or plate finish.

I have pretty much settled on my trusty lead holders (clutch pencils) with Berol Turquiose lead. I find wood pencils too much work keeping the points in trimmed, and I like the extra weight and balance of the lead holders. My favorite ones I got back in college when I took drafting. They are all metal and they are great. Unfortunately I only have three of them. All I can find now are plastic.

Thanks for the kind comments which encourage me. Oh well, rendering the stone and the worn sword is really exciting, new stuff for me. I found the opportunity to make use of the paper denting tehcnique I read in J.D. Hillberry's book to render realistic worn metal (which I used on the second sword). I had no drafting paper, however, so I had to directly dent the paper with the mechanical pencil tip, taking a huge risk of runing the paper. Anyway, here is the updated pic (I'll post the reference pic after I finish drawing this, and you'll be surprised)
