"Christmas Present"

I drew this "I Love You" hand for some dear friends of mine. It is drawn on Arches Cold Press watercolor paper. The paper really has too much of a tooth. I ordered some of the hot press paper today. I think it turned out fine, but I did have to fight the paper some. My wife bought me a drawing table for Christmas, so maybe that will help me to draw more. I took several pictures of my daughters' hand, and I liked the one coming through the poster board best. This was my first attempt at a hand.

Cool. Almost JD style here...

You have really pulled out a great piece. Tones and composition are very, very nice, still I suggest you find the darkest lines and add some grades. It would separate the fingers better. I agree it may be could idea to use paper with less tooth to get more details

MHK - What do you mean exactly about "add some grades"? My drawing lingo is very limited. Thanks for your suggestion, now if I can just understand what you mean

Good job!

I think what MHK (Matti) meant by "grades" was to add various shades of dark and light. Some of the lines should be darker, etc. I hope that helps. I'm limited in drawing lingo, too, so maybe Matti can explain better.

Yep sorry my bad english in the earlier post. I meant by "adding the grades" just that what Melissa said, darker lines between fingers to separate them better. But of course, it depends on the actual drawings appearance, some jpegs can be cruel

I tried arches cold press... I liked it but it was a little to rough tho.
You have done a great job... drawing hands are very difficult.
I like the way the hand is coming through the paper.
Are you going to draw it again using the hot press?

I probably will not draw this exact same one again since I gave this one as a gift. I am looking forward to drawing on the hot press paper though. I had several other pictures of the hand that I took that I could draw, but I still kind of hate to.

Yes, those JPEGs can be cruel. I know it is a little frustrating some times for all of us because I'm sure, none of the pictures posted on this site would do justice to the originals.

I had planned to take my time more on this drawing, but I was basically though with it in two evenings of work. The first evening, I completed the outline and one finger, the next evening, I completed the rest of the hand. I played around with it on and off for a few more days.

Thanks for all your kind words and encouragement. I do not draw very often, but I truly enjoy it. J.D.'s book helped me more than anything to try new projects. I am amazed at some of the results I've been able to achieve.
