"hi guys"

   Hi guys,

Here is a drawing I did of my grandad two weeks ago. I've only just recently started drawing again after scoring a miserable 29% for art in school last year. This drawing is my second attempt at portraiture, I would have sent you my first but it is far too shocking to show you guys. Anyway, please give me some advice on what I could do to make my next portrait look better, it will be most appreciated.

Thanks guys,

John.

Nice job John, looks like a picture. You got a great skin tone and the collar you really nailed it. If only you can smoothen out a little bit the background shading, I'll say it again you got a picture there buddy not a drawing.

Keep up the good work and God bless.....

Bravo! Wonderful work. You're really talented. What are you using to draw with, by the way? Do you use a grid? I'd love to see anythng else you've done, too.

I went back and actually READ your post this time:P and decided to see what kind of advice I could give you... for starters, don't listen to your professors - you're talented.

Second, regarding your concern with the background, I decided to apply my own technique of NO background to your drawing (using Photoshop) to see what would happen. Here's what happened.

Also, I bumped up your whites slightly (basically giving the drawing more contrast). See what you think.

Again, keep working - if you're really just starting out, you've got it.

Wonderful job, John!
You certainly do have talent! There's lots of great detail and feeling in your piece. Yes, more contrast would probably be better in your next one, but keep going!

Only 29%

If thats the quality of work you normally turn out, how high did the standard have to be to get 50% or more

I think Jim might be right!

You either improved a whole lot with this one, or your teachers are crazy. This is a picture with some real...soul I guess you could say, cos you got the form and the proportions down pat, you can focus on your grandpa's expression, which is really nice,
I was thinking try a dark bground too, since you've already started, make it pop out a bit more.
Is there more??
