"Gimli - WIP Updated Again"

I am drawing Gimli from LOTR. I have been working on this for the roughly 20 hours. I think the biggest challenge is going to be the beard. Please help me with critiques or suggestions. This is my first drawing that I am not rushing.

I have included the source picture along with a detailed picture of the drawing.

Thank You Yvan

Wow you've chosen a tough little dwarf to tackle. it's looking promising so far, i can already see the determination and character in his eyes. You're right the beard is going to be HARD. Take it a bit at a time, you said you're not going to rush this one and I reckon it'll be great. Good source too. Good Luck

Quite a challenge youve got here, Yvan!

If you are really trying to do it photorealistic (tones and details), I believe it would help you to make some adjusting to the reference photo to make it more drawable.

I suggest if youve got Photoshop try adjusting the ref a bit, I would add more contrast to it so the dark side of the face would pop out better, maybe it would be a good idea to add some brightness to the dark side of the face, too.

But if the total tonal balance thing is not an issue to you, just ignore what Iam saying, so far everythings looking good

Great start! You may want to define the creases in the skin folds with thin, very dark, lines, and also the nostils. Since the ref pic has a lot of constrast, you may want to darken your darkest areas to create that dramatic look. Not sure if you were done with the area posted but thought I would add my 2 cents!

You are doing a wonderful job so far....can't wait to see the finished piece!

Thank you

lookin' good so far. I'd echo what mhk said. You may want to take some artistic license on the area of the hat that is "bleached out" in the picture. A photo can get away with that big white space more so than a drawing. Sorry, I've not attempted many portraits, so can't help with the beard.

Quote I am stumped with on how to do the hair and beard. Any suggestions?

"Negative drawing" is the keyword. First get the right tones to the beard, then "pick up" the dark shadows around the hairs. Carve rubber eraser sharp to create light hairs. I suggest that you take a look to Mike Sibleys artworks if you dont know what I mean

Great start, but I don't envy you the job of the beard. The area around the eye looks to be more sloping inward in the photo, not so flat. Show us your progress, please!

Thanks for all the comments. The original picture is on an angle Melissa that's why it does not look proper. I will post an update in a few mins.
