"Child Finished !!!"

Hi Everyone,

Happy new year to all. Here I'm attaching my drawing of a child I have done in these holidays. What's more relieving for an artist than capturing the innocence and inquisitiveness of a 5 month old ?? It's the most challenging (atleast technically) subject I've ever drawn.I've already spent over 30 cumulative hours on this and it still needs some adjustments. I need your comments and critiques. At the moment I don't have access to the photoshop to combine the scans to make it complete (sanner size is 9"x15" only). The background in the scan is darker than it is in my drawing. Do I need to make it the darkest(because it's not very evenly blended now).

remain with love,

srivarey

Nice work Srivarey. The eyes looks really great. The only thing I noticed is the forehead, I think it's too light that it takes away your attention from the face of the child. Nice start for the year 2003. Keep it up and God bless.

Thanks Itoy and Avantar for the feedback. About the light forehead,it was just like that in the reference too. Actually I put some value there to give the illusion of small bumps on his forehead(hard to see in this scan though). I still have to understand that drama of light and shadow.

I like those eyes, too. I suggest you could still add sharper focus to the eyebrows and the neck area?

He (she??) is obviously a light-headed kid, who hasn't got much hair yet, which I guess leads to the forehead looking a little large, hair would soften it usually, and that means his eyebrows would be that light too. That was really just me speaking my train of thought.
You've got some amazing tone, did you blend? or is it straight pencil. It's a dramatic piece. I love it, it really grows on u, makes you smile.

This is beautiful! I am amazed at how soft and smooth the blending is! Wonderful work! I would say the background would look the best if you made it as dark as the darkest area of the face.

You certainly have a tremendous amount of talent!

Thank you

Wow! A great work. You said that you couldn't fit the whole image into the scanner. I think it looks great as shown! What the photographers call "filling the screen". Without seeing the whole thing, I can't say if I'd find the "cropped" image better or not. Either way, great job...

Excellent work. I agree with you that babies are very challenging as we have to work hard to get the features right. They are so subtle, aren't they? I bet you spent more time erasing to lighten the features than you probably did drawing them.

My feeling on the highlight on the head is that you did it perfectly. The lighting is obviously from the top and one would expect a bright highlight there. I would suggest that the background is too dark. I've found that with fair-skinned subjects that if I make the background too dark the contrasts are often too dramatic. With a muted background the subject seems more relaxed and peaceful.

Here's an example of the kind of background I go for:
