"Christmas Gift"

Kind of like Bill Johntson, I had a deadline of Christmas. Here she is. Let me know what you think.

Great job JT! I hope you made your deadline. I missed mine by a few days, but it did not cause a problem, thank goodness. I'm sure your gift made someone very happy. There is nothing like the look on a Mom or Dad's face when they see a drawing of their child for the first time (especially when they're not expecting it).

Looks great. What medium did you use charcoal?

Nice job JT. Everything is perfect but I noticed something on the left eye, it's really no big deal but like me when I look at a drawing I usually stared at it for a while, just like when you're eating you savor the food before you swallow, it's when I notice something but I really don't know what it is. Keep it up and God bless.

Hi JT

This is very good but (always the but ) since the main light source seems to be from the upper left, the highlights around the baby's left eye seems to be a few values to light.

Multiple light sources are sometimes hard to read.

The eye seems to be a little flat (2 dimensional) to me. A little more spherical shading would probably help.

Bob, T

Thank you for the tip. You are right on when you say that the highlight in the left eye is too bright. The reference photo had the head only about 3/4 of an inch in height, so I had to fill in some of the missing details. I had numerous other photos that showed the girl from different angles so that I could provide the detail that I enjoy creating. I'll keep your tip in mind on the next one. Thanks!

As to the source of light, the photo is taken outside with the sun reflecting off of the surrondings. I favor working from photos that provide good contrasts of light and dark. Photos with this kind of lighting allow me to suggest more roundness and depth than a single flash photo that was taken at night, for instance.

The medium is a combination of graphite and charcoal.

And to Bill, I did make my deadline. However, the parents went out of town for Christmas and are not back yet. Oh, well. The gift will still be a surprise when they get back.

Thanks for the tips and feedback.
