"Hello to all"

:)
Just joined your first class forum and thought i should say hello to you all , I'm Colin from Belfast ,
I been drawing from i was no age and always have had a desire to draw like the pros ,
Of late i have had a bit more time on my hands so followed my heart in search of talent from whitch i can learn how to draw in a serious and more rewarding style, hence i've landed here !
I spent 3/4 hours last night reading through some old posts , could'nt beleive my luck at finding a site with so much help and talent you Guys should have your own T.V. programe
I've learned more in the few hours reading the posts here last night than i have reading all the books i've went through over the years , I can't thank you enough for the tips and advice .
I have wasted no time at trying these tips and have started a new Portrait of my son Warren age 6 ,
I choose this photo as i thought face on would be easyer than 3/4 if you get my drift , will keep you posted a to my progress, i have noted enough tips to get me through ,
One thing i would like to ask , does anyone here use a magnafing glass , i got a large one to day from the camera shop/store, it's on a stand and has 1.7 x mag i find i can see more detail especially around the eyes at 4x6 inches it works a treat ,
sorry for going on .
bye
Cas

   Hi Colin!

Welcome to the forum! I can't wait to see your work. That's a great picture you chose to draw.

I've used a magnifying glass for years, especially since I like to draw intricate details. It's better than getting a headache from straining your eyes.

Good luck!

Your boy's a great looking kid. I'm sure you'll enjoy doing that portrait.

Welcome to the board Cas. Good idea about the magnifying glass and I think your drawing is coming along well too. Keep it up and God bless.

Your portrait is looking good. I think the hair may be, as you said, a bit too wavy in places. Also, the earlobe seems a bit too round in shape and sort of detached from the rest of the ear.
It's a great pic to copy from, and you're doing good!

Thanks,

I have been away from drawing a few years now so had to get some new stuff, this is what i'm using on Warren's Portrait

2 Faber castel clutch pencils with HB and B2 leads
Derwent Graphic wood cased H, & F
Derwent No1 & 2 Tortillon
Medium Kneaded putty rubber
Derwent Charcoal medium wood cased pencil
Derwent sand paper block ( helps get a real fine point)
Magnifying Glass ( see photo)
Canson smooth bristol board
Blu tack.
water colour wash brush to keep surface clear

Hope this helps , anyone here use a leather shamy ? i would like to know your opinions on using this for skin , i have never used it as i'm not sure what type or technique to apply

PS Dont be confused i have reregistered as (Colin.)
Cas.

Welcome to the forum Colin.

Looking good so far. Just take your time.

The chamois will give you ultra smooth skin tones and you will really like it. Check out J. D. Hillberry's site and post here for more information and to see the results of using the chamois.

Bob

Greetings from Delaware

Well this is where i'm at now , I'm happy with the portrait even though it could be a lot better , i know i have not reached that stage yet , and see this as anothere step in the journey to perfection
After messing in photoshop i came up with this change on the eyes , i have not made the change to the actual drawing just a copy in photoshop ,
I have never used a chamois , do i get the sort we would use on our windows ( leather)
Thanks
Colin
