"New Artist"

   Hello all.

This may be the wrong reason to start anything like art, but I am doing it because my girlfriend's biggest fantasy is to be sketched like the lady on that Titanic movie.

Anyway, I've been looking through this site and I am pretty impressed with a lot of the drawings so I am looking forward to getting started. I am not going to tell her I am doing this for about a year or two so hopefully I will be somewhat competent by then.

So my art background is pretty limited. I have trouble with stickfigures and I am extremely unartistic.

But the good news is when I start something I will stick to it until I get better.

Anyway, my question is, what do I need to get started? Is there a beginners book? Something that starts with the straight line and works its way to circles before jumping right into people? Any advice for the beginner besides "just stick to it"?

Thanks a lot and I look forward to posting a pic up here in a few months.

Welcome to the forums. I would recommend 3 books: J.D. Hillberry's book, Drawing from the right side of the brain and Lee Hammonds drawing realistic portrait from photographs

I echo with Yvan. Those three books are very useful for professionals as well as beginners.

I agree. JD's books are great. I also would go to Mike's site because he has so many tips and tricks posted. Kind of a step by step how to draw. Even though Mike's is basically animals it is still one of the best resources around. You can see his work here: http://www.sibleyfineart.com/

Welcome Gene,
I agree with Yvan, and here is a good order to proceed. Since you are just beginning, I think you should start off with "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. After that, try Lee Hammonds book. These will give you the basics and prepare you for more intermediate techniques - such as my book and Mike Sibley's site.
We would love to watch your progress. Please post some drawings when you get started.

JD, I was wondering if you send books here overseas, where can I purchase them or should the book be ordered directly by you? I thought about sending you email but since this topic came up I ask about it here, this info would help also other European artist to get your book

Matti,

I ship quite a few of my book overseas. I charge the suggested retail price for the book ($24.99). I use Global Priority Mail. It usually takes 5 - 10 days and cost $9.00. to ship to anywhere in the world. The total price comes to $33.99

I personally sign all of the books that are ordered directly from me, but if anyone would like me to dedicate it TO someone, they can write the name in the "special instructions" area of the checkout form.

Most of my overseas customers order using a credit card, so the exchange rate is handled by the banks. Just fill out my order form at:

http://www.jdhillberry.com/book.htm .

In the special instructions area of the order form, write the country that you would like it shipped to. Even though my checkout area states your shipping charges are $4.00, I will personally add the correct shipping of $9.00 to the price of the book ($24.99). A total of $33.99 will be charged to the credit card for shipping on overseas orders.

Some overseas customers have sent me US money orders. They are available at most banks. You can send a US money order for the total amount ($33.99) to:
