"WIP...freckels?"

here is a work in progress that I started a few hours ago. The subject has freckels, does any one have any pointers on giving a realistic look of freckels?

This is my first attempt at using charcoal, so bare with me I am still experimenting.

I had OK luck by using a tortillon covered with graphite, applied lightly..

When i draw freckles I use a 2b pencil and hold it at about half way down the pencil and very roughly draw some "circles" . I draw them all on then blend with a cotton ball over the face so it looks blended in with the skin. Then i do it again until I achieve the darkness I need. You could try that.
Good luck
Jenni

p.s looks fantastic so far!

Freckles scare me to death! I just finished a portrait where I had to draw freckles for the first time. I waited until everything else was finished (100+ hours), then added them. I was terrified! It was pure experimentation, but I ended up using a process similar to what Jenni described. I used a 2H pencil and gradually built them up in layers (alternating pencil and the very tip of a CLEAN tortillion), then LIGHT blending finally with a chamois. The final blending seemed to transform the dots into believable freckles. I think the most important thing is to not get in a hurry. Good luck!

I grab graphite with a tortillion and then dab onto the drawing. This was my first time and experiment with freckles. I think Hankers has the freckle dept. covered.

I am so glad you posted this topic!! My current commission involves one child having freckles. I was just going to leave them out but I think I will give the layering technique a try, easier to erase and cover up that way!

Good luck...eagerly awaiting the finished piece!!

Thank you

Donna, I REALLY wanted to leave the freckles out of my last portrait. But I knew all along (just as I'm sure you do) that they can't be left out. They are just as much a part of the person as any other feature. Unfortunately that doesn't make them any less intimidating (to me), but they really weren't as hard as I thought, they just require care and patience. I had to really resist the temptation to get in a hurry, which probably would have resulted in a disaster!

Looks good so far. I like those dark tones. About freckles: I dont remember Ive ever done this much of them, but I would try here "negative" erasing with blu-tack. Just blend smooth solid graphite over freckles areas, then dip areas around freckles away with blu-tack (if youve got it).

Again, Ive never done the maneuver this big but it looks like it would work well and create natural smooth not muddy look on her face
