"is graphite stable over charcoal?"
having some problems with a slitck surface (itsrreally a pencil surface) and am wondering if i can put graphite over charcoal (its vine, worked with my finger) its for the features;i dont want to put myself in a nasty situation this far in.
Yes, You can put graphite over charcoal. I do it often. Since graphite particles are flat, they tend to be slick, which makes it difficult to render charcoal OVER graphite. Be careful blending with your fingers, it is possible to transfer oil from you hands to the paper making it difficult to achieve smooth textures. J. D.
You can put pencil over charcoal (but not vice versa if the graphite is thick) although as graphite is shiny as the charcoal is matt, every pencil stroke will show at certail angles where the light hits it.
LOL ! I see that Phil. I will add that you are correct about the pencil lines showing - unless you blend them together. My biggest concern is blending with the fingers - especially with the mixture of graphite and charcoal it my be very hard to control the values and texture. J. D.
