First I cant get to any forums, then when I do my post has been wiped out, Its enough to make you paranoid - maybe it's jealousy }>

Even the number of posts I have done has been wiped out, I think I have dome more than 8

Anyway, here it is AGAIN!!!!

Hi Donna and thanks

Sorry I didn't put the technical stuff in this time around, I guess I should have.

It was done with charcoal, graphite and some carbon pencil on Bristol board.

Phil,

What is the benefit of bristol board? I haven't used it yet and I am curious about your view of its strengths over hot press paper.

Thanks,

Thanks JT and Jim,

To answer your questions, Firstly JT

Bristol and Arches both have their own unique quality, Arches is softer and grabs the graphite etc a lot more whereas bristol board sort of slides the graphite around so you have to keep that in mind. The first time I used it it blew my mind because I couldnt control the toning but you eventually get used to it. Back somewhere in the archive is a post entitled Self Portrait (first time I used Bristol) where JD and I discuss this.

Personally, and this is waht it boils down to, personal preference, I would use Arches things that need a softer feel to them and bristol for things that need to be sharper and have harder edge.

I wish I could explain better, but I feel certain subjects lend themselves to certain papers and techniques. This particular drawing would have looked completly different on Arches because of the paper and the way I, personally, would have used it.

Tim

That is such a big compliment recognising they where Derwent pencils. I have actually been waiting for someone to ask why I put I spliff in the drawing.......lol (its actually a home made tortillion for the uninitiated)

When it comes to drawing you are light years ahead of me in many respects (hair particularly) so dont scrap anything.

Oh I forgot to add, I am thinking of redoing my web site now I have a logo.

Thanks Itoy,

As you can probably tell I am at a lose end tonight

I did explain in the post that got wiped out that I felt I had to do something different to stretch myself, only so much can be learned from portraiture alone and it felt good to do something different. I learned a hell of a lot doing it, something I hope I can carry though to my next drawings, whatever the subject
.

Hello Phil, this is outstanding! It looks so real - even the spliff! I admire those who can imitate textures so realistically. I especially like the way you did the lettering and showed the wear & tear on the box right through it.

Time well spent!!
