"window to his soul"

a recent drawing i've just wrapped up. eyes amaze me, i think out of everything i draw, paint or photograph it's the eyes that really draw me in. does anyone else work on several dif drawings at a time? i alway have to have at least two or three, or maybe i'm just weird like that
for all of you who know proper techiniques for drawing, do you have to prep the paper or do anything to it before you draw on it? i never do, but i know with oil there's always excessive prepping of the canvas. i spray my drawings tho several times throughout, to prevent smearing and smudging, is that ok to do?

S-G,
You have captured the equine eye perfectly!!! I'm impressed. I started one with an eye and her forelock but my family (personal art critics) didn't like it and said just doing an eye is too weird. Maybe I'll drag it back out and finish it.

The eye is amazing, it would be good to see the whole picture as well. I tend to stick to one drawing at a time. I never do anything with my paper before drawing on it.

thanks.
i have this folder full of eye close ups from all the pics i've taken of human or animal. i think that eventually with practice you'll get the eye down bella. it also helps to know how they work, and how they catch light, all that lovely stuff. I literally dream about drawing, or painting i get so into drawing and painting that it's all i can think about, i'm sure it drives the people around me nuts. happy drawing

My family tends to be insanely critical of my drawings, my sister especially, she's got this saying and i hear it everytime i show her what i'm working on.. "doesn't it look so perfect in your head" and without a doubt i always fall for it and say yes.. "ha, you should keep it there." ever heard the saying, you are your own worst critic? i can pick my drawings to death but i still think family is worse

That's crazy, in a really good way. It's so real it's almost scary, I have about 3 or 4 drawings at the moment, I'll get frustrated with one and need something else to move on to, and then I'll get another idea and have to start it right away. For me the best part of the drawing process is starting out and the final resigned touches...so I just keep starting more...i'm crazy too.
I'd also like to know how fixatives affect the paper or the quality of the drawing...anyone?...

Amazing eye, yes the windows of the soul. I don't prepare paper before use, and spray a fix as I go when working with pastel or charcoal, when working with graphite, I spray when finished, I never lean on my work, so I don't have smudging. Sometimes I work on several drawings at the same time, but usually one, as I get so engrossed in one work.

Nature is not something that can be seen by the eye alone- it lies also within the soul, in pictures seen by the inner eye.

How do you keep your hand off of the paper? Do you use a bridge or one of those stick things to keep your hand off of your paper? Is the angle of your drawing board straight up or is it angled?
