"question on an idea of mine.."

I'm working on a project, it'll be two seperate drawings, the first is basically the pic below except i don't care much for the way the face on the baby looks so i wanted to redo it. The second one is all in my mind so far. I want to draw a young teenage mother bathing a crying baby in a plastic tub in the kitchen sink. So you'll be able to see her back and the the window looking outside, and of course the baby. I'm not sure if i can do it, but i wanted to draw the baby so half of the child will look realistic and the other half with be a doll, one eye will be the painted on look, the other real. The mouth would be real, and the one arm would have that plastic doll look. Anyway i was wondering if anyone has done or seen anything similar to this because i can see it sooo terribly perfect in my mind but i'm really not sure how it'll work out on paper. Otherwise I'll just set it all up how i want it and take some photo's to work from. I told the person i'm doing this for about the idea and she was thrilled, i'm just concerned this might be "above" my skills. So if you guys have any idea's or suggestions let me know.

This is quite an idea, SG! Just go for it. If youve got a vision about this, its probably the best one because you have thought about it way more than we have. But you dont have a reference do you? I guess you just have to do it, then show us some wip and then its time to think about it again. Its interesting to see how its gonna work.

I don't have a reference, but i was thinking i could sketch out what it would look like, post it and see what you all think. And once i get to the babys face i'm sure all you experts out there could give me some pointers. Thanks

with regard to the first one, have you conssidered a tryptich? in the first, the mother is skeletal and the baby is full flesh. perhaps in the second (same pose) both could be stripped of skin, but musculature is depicted. in the third, the mother could be full flesh and the baby skeletal. it would be a great exercise in anatomy, and it would look really realy cool, rading well as one unified piece.

that was actually my goal, to a set, it's supposed to represent teen motherhood. The mother in the first one is kind of representing how much she puts into the child and forgets herself. I dunno i haven't sketched it yet, i'm still toying with dif ideas, but i really like your suggestion. thank you very much

the teacher of my anatomy class loved triptychs, bone to muscle to flesh, or reverse. the thing i like about yours is that the mother and child are different. not one person in two years did that. you would have gotten an a for sure.

good luck

as for yourmessage, which is true of many parents not just teens, it is insightful and highly original. i guess the posted drawing would be the last of the series.

reubens did an allegorical painting called " roman charity", where a daughter feeds her decrepit and imprisoned man from her breast (we are to assume that the father is most likely in a debtors prison, which was a common place people were forced to rot well into the nineteenth century. i think steinbeck thought of this in the last scene of the grapes of wrath. i am posting a link below, just because its neat, and is along the same vein of thinking as your own. later

wow, thanks so much. very inspiring! I was ready to give up on my idea, turns out sketching this sort of thing without some kind of reference photo is harder than i thought. i'm taking a step back and i'm going to set up the scene with someone posing as the mother and photograph it so i can get all my shadows and lighting right. thanks
