"Spenser"

Hi all. This is my first post. I'm amazed looking at some of the drawings that you guys are doing. My stuff isn't quite in the same league as some of you, but I'm happy with the way I'm progressing. I've been drawing off and on my whole life (mostly off in my adult years..I'm 34 now), but definitely in the amateur category. I picked up a drawing book about a year ago by Gene Franks. I was very impressed with my first drawing I copied from his book. I think the secrets I learned were to layer in my shadows, and not to be afraid of going dark. I've been having a blast doing drawings ever since. Here's a sample:

This is my son Spenser. This is one of my favorites. I love the look Franks gives with dark outlines to his drawings. His backgrounds all seem to be in the right place and perfect. Mine looks a little awkward, but I think I needed it to pop out his right side of his face.

Comments and critiques are welcome.

Welcome to the board. This is an excellent piece. Any chance you can post some closeups of the face?

Ill have to look for the Gene Franks book next time i'm in the bookstore.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Jay, WELCOME! to the board. Your work is great. I like the way you handle the folds/tones on his shoulders. The face looks a little bit flat but I know you'll gonna progress as you go along.
Keep posting.

God bless,

itoy

Thanks for the welcome, and comments. Here's a close-up of the head. I think it looks worse in this pic. It's not very good quality. Maybe it's to close!

Here's the original photo...

I did it about 6 mos ago. There's already things I'd do differently. It does look slightly different from the photo, but looks close enough to my son that you can tell it's him.

Welcome Jay!! Your son is so cute. Your drawing is very good. I like Gene Franks' book. I did a tutorial from his book as well.

There is one thing that I've spotted that is a little off Jay.... and that's his eyelids.
I think it's the shading above the right eyelid ...not the perspectives.

Actually, I did this one several months ago, and my wife snagged it right away and hung it on our wall. I do love this picture. It's perfect for pencil drawing because of the darks and lights. Sometimes half the battle is finding the right thing to draw. It's funny you mentioned the eyebrow. It looked right when I finished it. When I pulled this stuff out again to post, the first thing I noticed was that that part looked a little off.
