"Multiple portraits"

Doing a huge magnolia flower with my wife's portraits on each flower peddle.. here is the beginning.. She is 30 now, so ifigure I can do each portrait with about a 10 yr. spread with each.. (infant, 10yrs old, 20 yrs. old, and now) I wanted to do the magnolia with a goldish color pastel but not sure on how to approach the portraits.. Should I color over them? should I fade into black from the gold? Any suggestions??

Hi Duke,

No suggestions, but want to say that this is going to be a very interesting project. Wonderful concept.

Good luck on the merge into the flower.

Your wife is gonna kill you telling the word how old she is

So, before you die we had better help you a bit Im not too sure pastel will give you the effect you are after, I think it will just overwhelm the graphite drawing, if not just totally cover it.

I think going lightly over with a pencil crayon will be your best approach. Put down some rough tone on a piece of paper and go over with pastel and the coloured pencil and see which looks the best.

Best to experiment first than totally mess up.

Well here's the finished piece.. I had to scan this in 6 seperate scans then stitch together with a program called panaview.. It came out just a bit distorted but oh well.. this is 24" * 36" (huge) and the final image was about a 16mb file.. so shrinking it down to get it posted REALLY took away from the quality (I know ya'll here that all the time!) I will try and manage some closeups of the portraits if I can.. used 4h, 2h, hb, 2b, 4b, 6b, and pastels for the magnolia.. so what do ya'll think?

..oh yeah.. I've started on my web page and have quite a ways to go.. if you go to http://www.theduke.20fr.com and click on the drawings it will take you to a slightly larger version of this image.. but still not large enough for detail.. p.s. I will definitely be hunting down a better web server that doesn't have so many pop up banners! any suggestions?

..this one really got distorted with the stitching program.. the left eyes droops quite a bit, and believe me, the original does not look like this..

It looks good--the flower and baby especially, I think. I was expecting to see another portrait on the 5th petal--it seems a bit uneven. But, overall, it's really good, and it's an interesting/neat design!
