"Half Dollar WIP"

Hi All,

I am still doing the exercises in JD's book and started the shiny metal one. Here is my efforts so far. I find this very difficult to do and have about 8-10 hours in this already... Matti send some of your Quick draw pencils soon

Getting a likeness at this small of image is hard. The coin is about double size, but it is still small to me.

Have a long way to go, but it is really fun trying to do this.

JD and a lot of the rest of you guys and gals make it look so easy.

The horseshoe was a piece of cake compared to this one.

Bob

Excellent work so far. I have had JD's book for awhile and read it all the time, but havent had time to do to many of the exercises.

I find it very difficult to work small. I have one of those magnifier lamps, but it seems to really strain my eyes trying to work looking through it.

Post some more progress pics as you go, this is looking really good and im interested in seeing the final.

Looks great so far. I just picked up JD's book today the first book I used to get better at portrait art was Lee Hammond. I have yet to do any from JD's book.

You're doing a great exercise there Bob! it's looking great
When I first got JD's book I was inspired to study and draw a baseball glove and ball. I really enjoyed doing that.

Hi Robert,

I had to dig out a pair of +3.00 reading glasses for this one. I tried my wife's magnifier hood, but it was too uncomfortable.

Bella, Toby, and Avantar, thanks for the encouragement. I am finding that doing the exercises rather than just looking at the pictures is really helping. I have done all the exercises on drawing paper that I cut to fit a small notebook and punched in the 3 holes.

The next project is $20 bills done with a greenish tone pencil. I hope to be able to do a couple a hundred a day

Looking good Robert. I know you're not done yet but the only thing is see missing is the cast shadows of the raised letters and the head. Once those are in place, those areas will really start to pop out.
I started off with poker chips, then I drew silver dollars, and then I went on to the burned $100.00 bill. I have to say, drawing coins was the most fun, because of the shiney metal surface. I drew mine actual size - and to do that, a magnifying glass is a must!
I'm glad you are having fun with the book. You are right, actually doing some of the projects is much more helpful than just reading about them.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of your progress on this. Thanks for being such a great advertisement for my book.
