So far your drawing looks better that the photograph. I can't offer you much technical help, as you obviously have it nailed so far. Where do you think the trouble spots are?

Hi Toby,

The shadow area at the back leg is the only thing that catches my eye. It is a little to dark and comes to far forward--sort of cuts off a bit of the dog tummy. Another thing that I think would help is a dark background like the photo--it would make the dog really pop.

Hope this helps.

Bob

Greetings from Delaware

Thank you Bill!!! This is my first drawing of a dog, & the first time using just charcoal. This is inspired by J.D.'s dog in his book. Bob, I was wondering if the dark shadow was too much. Thanks for your help. I will lighten it. I'm glad you mentioned the black background, because that was what I was going to do next. I was thinking of doing that with an ebony pencil for contrast. The only thing that I tried to add was to put 2 thin strips of highlight under the dark shadow of the nostrils, but I had alot of trouble doing it, because the shadow part would keep getting erased, so I left that out. I didn't know whether to use a white charcoal pencil or to leave it out, so I left it out. Thanks again for both of your comments. I really appreciate it.

Hey Toby,
I haven't drawn a dog before but I think you're doing great so far

Thanks Bella!!! I still have a more to do. This is the scarey part - how not to ruin your drawing!

Great Job Toby ,your drawing looks more animated then the photograph.he is a cute dog,for some reason the actual photo looks like a stuffed animal?...this sheds new light on bringing a photo to life.

It looks good. One thing I noticed is the dog's face seems to be stretched (taller) in your drawing. Overall, you're doing really good.

Thanks Absolute & Melissa. Melissa, I had a lot of trouble doing her head. I kept adding, then subtracting shadow. Maybe some texture will help, but can you suggest where I could add shading or whatever to make the face look wider. instead of taller? I noticed the same thing as well as all my other mistakes. Thanks for the help.

Thanks!!! I reread your comments, Absolute. That's a great compliment! It's the act of bringing the portrait to life. Gigi does look like a stuffed animal. She is a Bichon Frise - half poodle & half maltese.
