It's been a while since I have posted anything so I though I should just to let you know I am still active.

This is half a double portrait I am stitching together from two separate photos.

Just incase you are wondering. The actual drawing does'nt bleach out on the sunshine side quite that much in the original. I think I must have the same scanner as Jim !

Thanks Matti,

I have been making a concious effort to "force" the contrasts a little and so far it seems to be going Ok. I think my style is changing too, I seem to be less restricted to the reference and keep making little things up, shadows, creases etc....The next thing you know I'll be drawing dogs!

Great work, Phil, you have captured not only a likeness but also a mood with this picture. I encourage you to continue to trust your instincts. I think that is what separates the good ones from the great ones. Keep up the posts!

Very nice drawing Phil. I was just wondering about the texture of the shirt, how do you do it? Is it by using felt or just charcoal pencil? Thanks!

Wow, Phil....I really enjoy this one. What a cool pose and expression, and what a cutie! (I can almost hear, "Yea, sure, Mom....I'm listening.") The hair catches me the most, it looks amazingly natural, I just want to reach out and brush those stray strands. I love the eyes too, they shine and pop out at you the way they would in real life. Can't wait to see the rest!

Shirt, what shirt! .....lol

It was done with charcoal, cotton wool buds (those things you clean babys ears and noses with) and the texture of the paper. Infact, other than tortillions, thats all I have used to blend so far.

I love the light and darks, or course I have always been partial to pictures that accentuate the shadows. It's funny that I've tried to deminish that some since I've been here and you come along with this.

I think this little guys is daring you to draw him, great expression and you nailed it.

This is beautiful Phil!
I like the strong contrast also. How much time do you have in this?

I know you aren't done yet, but my only suggestions would be - if the shirt is going to be that dark you may want to pump up the values on the left side of his face and hair. As it is, your strongest values are on the shirt and it draws your eye away from his face.

I really like his expression too. You nailed another one.

Thanks JD

I know what you mean about darkening that side up and it is on the agenda. I'm building up some courage first and working my way around to it. The hair gave me some major headaches and sort of put me off a bit I will probably draw his sister first and see how she goes.

I'm not too sure about time taken, I think it's somewhere around 9 - 12 hours so far.

Incidentally, it's done on your favourite paper which confused me no end after using that bristol board, they work so differently.
