"double portrait"

Hello everyone,
This is my latest double portrait for the PGA. The guy on the left was in a WIP post a while back. I would like to do some more "tweaking" on this but I need to move on to the next one. If anyone has any advice on how to (quickly) improve any of these, I'll come back to them if I have time before my deadline.

Size: 14" x 22"
Medium" hb charcoal pencil, soft vine charcoal.
Time: 27 hrs
Gray hair since taking this commission: LOTS

Thanks for looking,
J. D.

Excellent Drawings, the look so life like, I would just like to say, every time I look at your work, it is an inspiration to me.

One question, do you plan to bring out another book, expanding on your original work in the first book?

These are really excellent PGA portraits you are doing, JD. You are really pushing yourself hard to make things quicker? 27hours is a very short time to do things like these. I cant give any hint to make them faster.

But it seems to be that I am out of work right now so maybe you would like to delegate some PGAs to me? (just kidding)

Hi JD,

They look good to me Is 27hrs for each subject or the double as a whole? If it is for both I would say that is pretty damn quick, almost in Matti's league

The only think I did notice, and this is probably due more to the scanning than anything, is the guy on the right, his left eye as we look at him. The line from his eyebrow down his nose and down to his eye looks a little dark and may need softening. Other than that, a bit of plastic surgery is the only other thing I can think of at present I guess none of us are ever happy and could keep "tweeking" forever, even moreso when the pressure is on.

Good luck with the other 23.... sorry.....thats probably the last thing you needed to hear!

J.D. I love the way everything in your drawings look so clean. Every edge, every line. Flawless!!

I love to "tee it up" Are these guy's local boys? They don't look familiar to me.

Thanks Glen, MHK, Phil and Mark.

Glen, No imediate plans for another book, but as soon as these portraits are done, I will be doing a series of articles in "The Artist's Magazine" in their Drawing Board section.

Marc, thanks but I wouldn't say flawless. If I could I would spend twice as much time on these. BTW, these are all hall of fame members in the Colorado chapter of the PGA.

Phil, This was 27hrs for both of them. I think I'm getting faster, but my money is still on Matti in the "Quick Draw" competition. I see what you mean about that eye and nose. It looks like some one punched him! I'll soften it a little. Thanks.

I'm not too fond of the curved bottom on these. They will be framed in a rectangle as you see here. There will be another mat opening under each person that will contain their bio.

The reason I did the curved bottom is because I am combining photos of people that were taken under completely different lighting conditions. These two match fairly well, but some of these will contain people outside in sun light, wearing informal clothes. I was under the impression - and it may be false, that this would sort of separate them in a way. I have combined people in portraits in the past without doing this and I always felt it looked strange having them seemingly sit next to each other with strong light from opposite sides. In this case, it may look like one guy is severly underdressed for the occation if they appear to be sitting next to each other.

I'm open for suggestions. Does anyone else have any ideas on this? Phil, Does your new double portriat have different lighting on each subject?

Thank you all again for your comments. I'm so happy you are all here and this is such an open, supportive group.

"Phil, Does your new double portriat have different lighting on each subject?"

OH BOY DO THEY EVER!

They are taken years apart, at different times of year, one inside the other outside. One is in colour the other is in black and white. One is in focus the other (the one I just posted) is a bit blurred. Oh I nearly forgot, the light comes from oposite sides

Your next question is how did I get around this. Simple, I flopped one I did ask first, explained why and showed what it would look like, she was quite happy and so I got the OK. The only problem is, the one she agreed to being flopped is the girl, and she has writing on her buttons, so I have to sort that out.

I guess you will have to match up the lighting with as many portraits as possible and forget about the others for the meantime until you get to them, otherwise you will just end up too distracted to work with what you have.

Sorry I could'nt be of more help

Phil, Great idea of reversing the image. I may have to use that.
Each portrait contains the PGA members that were inducted into the hall of fame for that given year. What I'm trying to say is, I don't have a choice of matching who is next to each other in a portrait. I could be putting a guy in a tee shirt - taken in sun light, next to a guy in a suit - taken in a studio. That's why I did the Vinyette (sp) type of edge on the bottom of the portraits. But the more I look at it, the less I like it.

Quote ..I am combining photos of people that were taken under completely different lighting conditions...

I was wondering why didnt you set up photosessions with these guys before drawing to get similar lighting conditions on each of them? Did they just give you bunch of photos to draw from?

Matti,
I would have loved to take my own photos. The PGA is still in the process of rounding up reference photos for me to use. Some of these guys aren't even alive still.
