"Christmas present"

This is of my mum and older brother, but a long time ago, he's a few days old here I think, and he's 21 now .
I'd love any comments or suggestions for improvement before I frame it for my parents for Christmas.
I used charcoal and graphite.
It's on an A3 sheet so a little less than 12" x 17" (or something)

Oh and because of the A3 size and my scanner is A4 I had to stick it together in Photoshop I hope you can't tell

I guess I could show you the source while I'm here it was black and white to begin with. I printed it out a little bigger and now I realised I should have looked at the original again because it shows the depth better....oh well...

Hi Jess,
I'm no expert, I just know what I like and I like what I see. I think your mother will be very moved by this special portrait. As my wife tells me often, part of the specialness of a drawing is who does it and what they see.

If I were to notice anything in this portrait that I might suggest and again I'm no expert. I might would down play some of the wrinkles aroun the lower lip and chin. In the original they are certainly present but also surrounded with more shadow and therefore less noticable.

Mostly I think you have a very special gift here.

Steve

Very nice Job!! What a great piece to draw. I think you captured it very well. I'ts hard for me to see but your mums hair looks like it might need just a little more detail on the side of her head. Kneaded eraser type stuff.

She's going to love it!!!

Jess it looks great! Your mom will be so happy! I love the look and feel of the baby's face. If anything, I think the end of your mom's nose looks 2D. I think some shading around the nostril area and some more highlight on the tip of the nose would do wonders...

Well done-

Excellent work, jess! You have captured this emotional moment exceptional well. I have noticed earlier that you are the master at drawing babies.

My suggestions: Maybe babys ear and mothers hair need yet pencilwork. I believe you could also try different texture on the pillow and blankets to enhance contrast between smooth skin and somewhat rougher material

Jess,
I think that's a wonderful drawing. I don't care about the hair, the pillow, blanket....... because they're incidental to the wonderful emotion you've captured. And I love that scrunched up mouth!

A little being and big being in perfect harmony!

I hate to mention this now.... but... I would extend the highlight on the bridge of the nose down to the end. I think that's an optical illusion in the photo - photos don't always know best! The tip of the nose does look flat and I'm certain it's because the highlight of the top ridge has stopped short.

Thankyou everyone for your encouragement, and even more so for the pointers, they are exactly what I needed and you're right, on all of them, sometimes you need to see it through someone elses's eyes for a while. It's so clear when it gets pointed out I'll make some changes and try and post it again.

OutStanding jess! this is perfect proof that the people and subjects that we care most about ,are the things we take the most time on.and it really shows because your angles and shading is done with much time and carefull study.
ive never been as happy with a commision as i have things ive wanted to do on my own.
i agree you are the baby expert,...babies always look so close to each other so its hard to get a likeness, you captured both of them.

just a side note---- i have a website that is more like a webpage..that i promote on my own...ive added many people's links from this forum....but its growing so fast that i cant keep up with all the sites,.....just incase anyone stops in and doesnt see theirs,,,but i think ill just add them on request.
take care
JIM
