"My duaghters dance teacher...as a young lady"

This commision was more like a trade....I did her portrait one of her young and the other of her currently.

In exchange I will have advertising space in her recital booklet for free. <big dance company>

I am not happy with it...but her fiancee loves it...and I guess that is what counts?

The obvious critique would be on your proportions in the piece.

One of the ways to get the correct proportions of a face (or anything for that matter) is to make a photo copy or a 'scan & print' of the original photo. Then you must rub the back of the print with a pencil. Flip it over onto your drawing surface and trace out the main features to transfer the image.

Try this on your next project. Your shading technique is very good, all you're lacking is the correct placement of the elements of the face, I guarantee you will be very satisfied with your results.

Have fun!

What the client thinks does count, but you also need to be satisfied with the final result as well.

Compared to the ref pic, her eyes (esp. irises) are a bit too large, and you did her nose smaller in your drawing. May I suggest that you try using a grid. You don't need to always use a grid, but it helps you size & place features at the right angle (it really helps when the person's head is tilted like yours here) and you'll get the proportions right so you can concentrate on other more important things like tones, shading & blending. Adding more darks and lights to her hair will also help too.

If I'm not satisfied then I give it a couple of days go back look at the drawing and if I'm still not happy I re-do it.Usually the second time around I find I get what I was going for....I'm satisfied and usually the person I'm doing it for is happy.

It looks like there is a grid on the photo, but the proportions in the drawing are still not right. Good job on the shading and hair, though. I'm glad your client likes it. Maybe you'd still want to fix some things, though, if possible. The jaw shape isn't right and the face looks too wide (besides the things Becca mentioned).
The mouth, also, isn't smiling as much in your drawing (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), and the bottom lip looks a bit bigger in the photo. Keep on drawing--you're doing good.

Thank you for all of your comments...I think I am going to redo it. I wasn't given a time frame on this piece ...and even though I have another commission to work on I feel I should still give them my best...and this truely isn't it.

Unfortunately I spray the peice with fixative to reduce smudging so going back I don't think is possible....or is it?

Enia

I think I know why her fiance liked the drawing. You captured the kindness and tenderness in her eyes very well (personality traits which he probably sees in his fiancee) and also in her smile - which is not only very hard to do, but it also requires a type of skill, an "eye" if you will, for what goes beyond the photograph. In this drawing you show you have that "eye".
It's a very expressive piece of work! Very nice.

Best Wishes
Enia

Thank you for your kind words.

She has not seen them yet, but I think your right He loves her to peices and I think he would love anything that resembles her.

I still am going to retry her portrait and hope it turns out better...and who knows maybe I will let them choose between the 2?

ive got to agree with linda, the eyes are very good, always when i'm doing a portrait thats the first thing i shade and try to make the best, because if you get the right eyes even if you have some mess ups the viewer will still be drawn to the eyes, all in all a nice portrait, good luck on the second one
