"Just a question"

When using chamois and felt to blend do you lightly blend just over the work following the shape or do you work it in .I am getting a muddy look to my picture and was wondering if I am overdoing the blending. One more:) ..Does the size of the portrait make a difference to the total affect?I am finding that when I work off of small photos I miss things.
Thanks everyone for your help:)

thats a very good question vicklyn, and also something i had and still do have a lot of trouble with, cause i was doing the same thing as you...i was use to adding the graphite the way i would add it without blending...and i would add about a gallon too much,....so i eased off of it quite a bit,.....its amazing how far just a tiny bit of graphite can go...or how much shading you can do with a blender that just barely seems dirty,......i was very discouraged at 1st,but its getting easier now that i have started adding the graphite gradually instead of as much as i think should be there all in one shot,......also just as an experiment have you tried using a small brush and powder graphite for the light shading?.....i just started combining that with the solid pencil..and i like it a lot.

I haven't tried that yet absolute.I really wouldn't know where to start. I am just now beginnng to blend with a chamois.Do you buy the graphite powder or do you collect it from sharpening the pencil.I am quite new at this. Thanks Vickie

Yup i just grind the graphite on fine sandpaper...over a different peice of paper to save it....there is also a topic called"sanding station"...it shows where a guy made his own set up to collect it....robert i think is his name.....
here is a scan of the brushes i use along with a q-tip to give you an idea of how small they are the 4300 shader taklon,..is my favorite,....i just keep them handy and think of them as pencils that can do very nice light shading,....it works for me cause im use to applying the graphite without blending,...its hard to explain...but its worth checking out,...im sure you will find at least a few things it would be usefull for...depending on how you go about drawing......after al...there is no rule that says you have to apply the graphite directly with a pencil.
