"Another finished commissioned piece"

   Hi folks -

In between pounding out HTML I've been drawing too... here's the latest - it's a bit of a change for me... it's a 5 X 7 - a lot smaller than I'm used to working, but I actually liked doing it (not to mention that it only took me a day)... there are a few small differences in the finished piece to the original photo, but the original was so washed out that I had to enhance and make a lot of stuff up... her left eye looks a little smaller than in the original, but I'm going to fix that.... and her mouth is a little different, but I'm not sure that's worth fixing - it still looks like her, so I don't see any reason to muck with it....

Let me know what y'all think (yes, I'm from Texas y'all...)

Robert

Robert,
I think it's great and the only diff. I see in her left eye is maybe the pupil is smaller on the (our right) edge. It is wonderful, especially for a mini portrait!

What they said! Excellent work!
I'm wondering--are you going to leave her shirt & the blanket all white or add some more details? (Maybe they're there and it's just too hard to see.) It looks good how it is, but I think it would look even better with some shading on the white cloth.
There are a couple of other differences, now that I look at it closer--the lady's chin seems to be a different shape, and her neck is slanting more in the photo. I saw the neck difference earlier and thought that it wasn't worth mentioning, and probably isn't because she could have moved her neck, but her chin does look a bit different.

That is way 2 cool x2.......thanks to you i have 3 ebony's.....2 still unsharpened cause i just cant get the light stuff with it...i havent tried it on smooth paper yet but that would be nice to not have to keep changing pencils and stuff...when i try to shade the real light stuff..i either end up too dark ,,or nothing at all.??
but anyhow..just for fun.i think if that the inside of that eye was just a dot bigger..you could have posted the drawing 1st and then the photo...i dont think anyone would have known until the end.

Well, I was wrong about the stuff not mattering - here's what the guy send back to me:

"I have attached a cut out of the two pictures. The one I sent and the one you sent. It appears that the detail in my mothers face is the issue. I'm an artist also just too lazy to do this myself so I don't want to hurt your feeling but here is what I would expect to correct the picture:

My face looks very good in the picture I know there is not much detail in the picture to work with but that is why I was having it drawn instead of manipulating it in Photoshop. I wanted you to add the missing details and shadows like you did with my face.
It appears that the detail below her nose and to the right of her face as we are looking at it is really hard lines and maybe out of proportion, it makes the mouth and face look distorted. It almost looks like she just returned from the dentist.
The right eye as we look at it (her left) is looking at the viewer instead of to her left (our right) as in the picture. This makes her look cross eyed.
The right eye as we look at it (her left) also doesn't appear to be proportioned correctly, it looks too small as well as the brow above.
The right side of her face doesn't have any detail to it.
PS I know the picture isn't very detailed but that was why I wanted an artist to modify the picture and make it look better. She looks like she is looking slightly up and with an inquisitive look in the real picture."

Makes me want to just give up. Any suggestions? Should I just send this guy his money back?

outside of making the eye look bigger just a tad...wich could also just be the scan...computers NEVER catch everything....i dont know what the guy wants?....does he want you to create something that isnt there?....if you add more contrast i think it will all fall out of balance......my theory is bad photos=bad drawings..
mabye he should have looked for a characture artist instead of a realist?..im not sure...its hard to get mad at the guy cause i dont think he understands the deal.....but i wish him luck with finding a better reproduction of his photo,......anyone thats any good at it charges around $800.00 big ones and i doubt he is going to find anything better...id have to see it to believe it if he does

I made some modifications whcih I'm about to go scan. If he's not happy with that, I'm sending him his $50 back, along with the drawing so he can fix it himself (unless he's still "too lazy" to do it himself.)

Sorry folks, this is a good drawing. I'm not sacrificng my integrity for $50. If I'm wrong, please tell me, but for $50, I mean, come on...

Should I tell him it's gonna cost another $50 to fix it? I don't work for free.

Not to sound like an egotistical bastard or anything, but this is the first time anyone has not been totally satisfied with anything I've done. Maybe I'm just being a pouty baby about it... oh well, guess we can't win 'em all.
