"Question for everyone"

   Hi folks -

I have been updating and streamlining my website in the last week or so... I've been advertising on Usenet and seem to be attracting a few people, but none of them seem to want to look at more than one page - then they leave (I have a tracker that I use to monitor my traffic)...

(Even though it may be somewhat of a conflict of interest...) I'd like to get some feedback from those of you that have a site (as well as those that don't) and see what you think... why aren't people staying and looking at more of my site? Is there something missing on my first page that would make people want to stay? Do I have the wrong color background?? Is it hard to navigate?? Unclear?? I'm just kinda stumped... I'm in the marketing field, so I'd like to think I know at least a *little* bit of how to market myself, but....

Anyway, if you guys don'd mind, I'd really appreciate it... and if this is the wrong place for this message, let me know where a more appropriate one would be....

Regards,
Robert

If you posted your sites URL it would be easier to have a look and see if there is anything offputting

Hi Robert

Just took a look at your site (found the address in your profile).

Looked OK to me, but it may be the cursive titles. Also when I visited the 'Otherworks" page, it was very slow uploading ( I am still dial-p and on at 31,200 today).

Bob

Greetings from Delaware

I'm assuming that you are talking about the site at http://users3.ev1.net/~portraitart. If so, then when I first went to your site I almost closed the window without going further.

I noticed that you are not using conventional looking 'buttons' to access the pages on your site. It could be that people visiting your site simply don't know there are more pages because they don't see any 'buttons' to click on. People are creatures of habit and look for 'raised buttons' to click on.

By the way I think your site looks great and the pictures are wonderful.

Jace

Well, being a graphic designer, I thought it would be nice to use some actual handwork in my web design, seeing as how I use my hands to draw... I've always liked to put a little human touch in my design work, since it's all so computerized nowdays... I guess I'm just old school in that regard... do you think it looks unprofessional? hard to read? pretentious?!

As far as the Other Works page - yeah, it has about 30 images on it... maybe I should put a disclamer about it loading slowly, but to be patient??

Here's the URL for the psychically-impaired - :7

Hi Robert.

Looks good to me. Only thing that could better are some of the jpegs... The quality decreases when resizing them on html-mode. Itd better prefer resizing them in photoshop.

Your pages are very good (probably you are still going to take some borders off on those link images?)

I think that the less pages the better, so I am trying to put almost everything on one page on my site. But of course there are hundreds of ways to make a good website

   Thanks MHK -

Can you see the borders around the nav bars? I can't on my computer.... and what is the code for turning them off? I've never quite known exactly what it is...

Well, I've had a good look around (even signed your guest book ).

It's a nice site, easily navigable, colours are Ok, everything comes up nice and quick, I really can't see anything wrong.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe you have it placed in a caregory on usenet whereby people are expecting to see something else... I dont really know. Maybe someone else can see something I missed.

I see you are a graphic artist too! pain in the ass is'nt it

I love the script you used.

Phil

   Thanks Phil -

It's my handwriting... I like to think it adds a personal touch... but maybe people really won't know they're "buttons" (I really don't like using the term "buttons"... to me, the idea of making a website look "electronic" is moot... it should reflect the person making it, and not merely like a sterile control panel... just my opinion...
