I think you have done a great job! I have not seriously tried rendering hair so, I do not have any pointers on that But I just noticed that in your drawing one of the tooth (our right, baby's left) seems larger than the other while in the reference, they seem to be of the same size. Also the shadow on the baby's right cheek seems stronger (??) am not sure. Maybe its just my eyes playing tricks on me in both the cases
I like the ear, good detail!! Cute baby, cant wait to see the completed portrait

I agree that you've done a great job! The hair isn't quite realistic, but looks fine that way. Perhaps using a finer pencil for the strands of hair would make it more realistic.

   Hi -

Ok, don't hate me, but here's what I think you might do... get out your kneaded eraser, and back off of the shadow areas about halfway... this will flatten the overall hair mass out... then, like Melissa said, go back in with a finer point and put in some dark strands - keep them tight together... finally, go in and pull out highlights.... basically, what you're doing is giving volume to the hair, dimension... note that the clumps of hair cast shadows too...

this is my son's portrait I did a few months ago... his hair was pretty hard to do, seeing that it's very blonde... but I hope this helps...

portraitartist2002.. thanks so much for the tip!! I will definitely give it a try.. Thanks everyone for the kudo's.. man I love this forum!! The tooth will be filed.. like I said, I'm not even close to finishing.. still have ALOT of highlites to pick out and shading to blend.. and as we all know, the scan is alot darker than the actual pic, I didn't adjust the color on this one, just straight from the scanner to the forum.. I have a prety lax day at work tomorrow, so hopefully I will have it done by the end of the day.. thanks again everyone..

I don't know if you have tried it yet, but if you blend those shadows with felt it will create a really nice smooth baby skin.

Thanks alot J.D. I've been working on the drawing all day and didn't have any felt handy.. so I used a McDonalds napkin:( I will definitely invest in the felt as seen how it works.. Here it is so far.. still not pleased with the hair, almost makes me want to quite

Hi theduke...

I am bothered by the darkness of the darker skin tone on the front of the face. Maybe if you lifted them to a lighter value using a kneaded eraser it would look better to me.

Sort of reminds me of the Gerber baby.

A little lightening of some of the hairs would also be nice. If I remember correctly this shows in the reference photo.

Not bad, and I think with a little touch up here and there you will have a winner.

Bob

Greetings from Delaware
