"Old work"

Here are some of my old works. I just wanted to share and keep active in the forum.

These are not typical of what I have seen here, but since I don't have any new drawings to share decided to put these here for comment.

I have been busy putting together some value charts and doing some pencil/paper charts to see what the different paper and pencil combinations look like. These are taking a lot of time since I chose to include just about every pencil I have and 5 different papers. I may cut down on the paper choices to 3. I chose smooth (Bristol - vellum & smooth), rougher, two brands of Cold Press watercolor paper (Arches & Strathmore), and another watercolor paper called Aquarius from Strathmore. Probably will eliminate the smooth Britol and Strathmore CP paper. I also have some of the Ritmo charcoal pencils on order and will have to include them when they come.

Hey Bob,

I've pondered the thoughts on drawing a lighthouse, you did an exellent job, what kind of paper did you use? and is it all done in graphite? one other thing....how long did the second drawing take?

I have this thing about paper lately. I've been going over JD's book with a fine tooth comb and it's amazing to see how my drawings have changed! from not only the different types of pencils, blending stumps (I only used fingers until I read JD's book) but, paper as well. I'm currently trying out Arches cold press and it is wonderful paper.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work

Btw, I will hopefully be able to show my drawings soon. I order a scanner online and it said 4-7 working days.....but with thanksgiving coming up I guess it will be delayed

Hi Bella

The lighthouse was done in my sketchbook (cartridge paper) and it was done on location.

The second drawing was done years ago, so I have no idea how long it took to do. It probably took a few days at least as I am not the fastest when it comes to drawing and painting.

One thing I wanted to suggest... If you are experimenting with papers Strathmore puts out a sample pad of various watercolor papers. It is not expensive and you should be able to find it at some of the art and craft stores in your area. There are about 10 different types in the sampler. That ought to keep you busy for awhile.

   Hi Robert,
Excellent work!! Like you, I pulled out some of my old stuff to show here on the forum. I live south of you down here on the outer banks of NC. I'm sure you'd love to draw some of the lighthouses we have down here. I'm planning on doing some work on the Hatteras and Bodie Island Lighthouses.
Also, I love the Railroad Depot you've done. I was browsing the net tonight for some good railroad material to draw. Unfortunately, I'm finding that prospect to be rather futile. Guess I'll have to turn elsewhere for really good reference materials. Anyhow, I look forward to seeing some of your other work.....

Take care,

Hi Tony,

Been down your way a few years ago and got lots of lighthouse photos. I have yet to paint any of those but just recently pulled up the Bodie Light and was contemplating doing something with it. I loved the area and hope to return in the future.

I do have a new drawing that I will be posting after I get around to taking a photo of it. Trains, birds, lighthouses, nature, trees, etc. etc. have always been what I like to draw and paint. The problem is with all the possiblities, just where do you start. I really would like to pick one subject and explore it more fully, but have not be able to settle on anyone yet as they all appeal to me.

Let me know if you find any good train material that can be used.

Bob
