"My Parents - WIP"

These are my parents when they were younger, and it's hopefully for a gift for them in a month or so...if I can finish it by then. I might have to wait until their anniversary or something.

I have been working on this for a few weeks, now (or has it been
months--I'm not sure )... about 7 hours in all. It has a long way to go, but I'm pretty pleased with it so far. I only have a simple outline of my mom so far, so I didn't include that. I know it looks funny with my dad's eyebrows & hair white and his mouth not filled in. Comments & critiques are appreciated!

Oh, dear, how awful! I just noticed how terribly too long my dad's chin is in my drawing! I can fix it a bit, but it might not look quite right...

I agree with Jim, don't worry too much about his chin at this point - chins are something I always wind up adjusting a few times but usually I wait until the major facial features are pretty much done. You're off to a great start, his eyes & nose look well placed & shaped.

Yes, I do think Art Papa is having some difficulties, I'm only seeing a few posts too. Like Itoy suggested, maybe they all got nuked or something?

Thank you so much for your comments, Jim and Becca! I guess the chin is fixable (I hope), and it doesn't look too bad, but it struck me all of a sudden and seemed quite drastic at the time.

Thank you, Bella! I did get the chin looking better, though I don't think it's entirely done yet. I'll post an update pretty soon, I think. Maybe after I get the mouth or eyebrows done.

Thanks, JT....right now! Here's the latest. I made the chin smaller, added the ears, and darkened in the forehead and the right side of the face (generally a bit darker all over). It does look liney up close, so somehow I'm going to have to fix that (more pencil work and blending, I guess). I can't wait until it's finished, but I'm rather scared about doing the eyebrows, mouth, and hair. The reference photo is rather dark, too, so it's hard to work from. I'm lightening my picture up a bit.
Comments & critiques, anyone?

I just went and blended his face with a tissue, and that made it a lot softer! (I was previously using Q-tips, which are pretty good.) And I changed his left ear a bit (on our right), since I noticed it was not shaped quite right. His jaw on the right, also, seems to stick out too much, and I tried to fix it, but it still doesn't quite look right. (These changes were made after the attachment, so you can't see them yet.)

I'm excited, since it looks like he's coming alive! I was a bit scared to do the mouth and eyebrows, but it went well, I think. My sister saw it before I did the eyebrows and said, "Wow! You should start selling, soon. You could charge $1000 for drawings like that." I protested at that price, but she said at least $400. I don't think I'd charge over $100 for a while, at least not for a one-person portrait. Anyway, I'm not nearly as good as many of you (nor a tenth as fast), but I am pleased with how things are going on this so far. J. D. Hillberry's book and all of you have helped a lot!
