"Calf Roper (FINISHED)"

Well here it is. I'm finished with it. It's probably the most detailed piece that I've ever done.

Rodeo and roping calves has been a big part of my life growing up so I had to draw this when I saw it. When I looked at the picture it reminded me of what it's like to be at a rodeo roping calves on some sunny afternoon.

For some reason the scans came out really blurry at the botton end. Also a couple of inches were lost on the sides and the top because of size. Anyway, let me know what you think of it.

Paper size: 14" x 15"
Image size: ~12" x 11"
Hours to complete: ~90

Shelby

This is wonderful Shelby. The textures are fantastic. I appreciate the close-ups. What I am mostly impressed with is the dirt. It is one thing to create ground containing grass in perspective, but it is tricky to do plain dirt. Gradually fading the detail makes it recede nicely. Was there anything special you did to create this effect?

Thanks a lot J.D. I would like think that I knew exactly what I was doing when I drew the dirt, but it was probably a luck thing that I pulled it off. In the referece photo, the dirt started to blur a little with less detail as the dirt got farther away (an aperture thing I think). I just tried to replicate it by not going as dark in the shadow areas and tried to blend the tonal values together a little more with a harder lead and kneaded eraser.

Excellent work, Shelby! I especially like the fur and clothing, but it's all great! I know you took lots of time and used patience--things I don't do very well with.
Keep up the great work.

Hi Shelby,
That is an amazing drawing.
Would you mind telling me what kind of paper you used?

that was 90 well spent hours ,no doubt about it..! the dirt even looks fluffy the way it would be in real life when they shovel it in
,you have motivated me to get started on something new.
..ive really been keeping up on the progress of this drawing,.
...some drawings only look really cool for a a few minuites.
..some still look good after a few days.
...but drawings with this quality look good every time i see them.

That's a superb drawing Shelby. I saw it part-completed on an earlier visit and it's cetainly fulfilled my expectations.

Techniques aside (which are faultless) I particularly love the balance and energy of this piece. It's a perfect frozen moment in time and I really cannot help but complete the action in my mind.

Outstanding Shelby!!! Totally balanced with all the detail to boot!! (No punn intened with "the boot" comment. Nudge!) I totally agree with Mike, you know whats coming and you can't help but play the rest of the scene in your mind. By the look on the calfs face he knows too.

Keep up the good work.
PS. My wife loves your work!!

peace!

Thank you all very much for your kind words. I really appreciate them, epecially coming from such talented artists as your selves.

Bella, I used Strathmore 400 Series Drawing (smooth) paper. It's pretty smooth but still has a little bit of tooth, unlike Bristol. For some reason I just can't quite get used to that extremely smooth glass like surface.
