"Well, I finally made it here..."

I found this forum some time ago and I've trying to make time to get back ever since! Well, I finally made it and it's great to see so much quality work and down-to-earth criticism.

I'm currently working on a Cairn Terrier study. Usually the drawings flow but occasionally they fight back.... this one began tame enogh but it's just developed teeth and I'm struggling to hold the middle dog together -- so, comments and assistance welcome please!

I've included a detail of an almost completed area. If you want to see what the finished drawing should look like then I have a pre-study trial drawing available - but I don't want to overload the system on my first visit!

I feel at home already and I've only just arrived.

Thanks for the welcome Bob! Do you mind me being here? I recognise a few names here and wouldn't want to tread on any toes.

This drawing (one of a set of three eventually) is taking most of my time but after Christmas I should be able to participate here properly.

I'm just taking a short break from the drawing. I've just moved the rear end of the dog into the shadow, as it should be. Possibly the front is looking better now (I've removed quite a lot of extraneous detail and brightened it where needed) but it's still looking like a drawing. I'll attach the trial drawing so you can see what I'm aiming for.

Thank you but how about "Here's what you do to put it right" ? :o)

Actually I suspect it's just reached its Ugly Duckling stage when NOTHING looks right. If I keep drawing it might correct itself in time........... with luck.......

Mr. Sibley,
I feel awful silly and presumptious to even think of critiquing your work or even offering suggestions, but that doesn't seem to stop me from putting my foot in my mouth.

I think (dangerous words) you are probably right about it defining itself as you continue. I watched my work do that to my own amazment, but you already know that.

In looking at the drawing and the reference, it seems that the areas in the shadows of the barn, may not be shaded enough. Perhaps the contrast of the upload just makes it look that way. If I'm in the sunlight and look into an unlit barn, the images in the rear of the barn would be less defined.

Don't think me foolish, I'm in awe over your talent.

Steve

No foot in mouth detected Steve... ) But you've got a good eye - and a fresh one which is even better.

The areas in the shadows of the barn are probably not too far wrong - I tend to increase the contrast slightly when I'm scanning for the web. And you have to bear in mind that these dogs are only about 18" high so you are much closer than you think to the cart and horse.

What appears to be happening with the central dog is that I failed to properly bridge the tonal gap between the darker head markings and the lighter, sunlit body. I don't mind this too much and quite often let the drawing dictate its own look. Now that I've moved the rear into shadow I think the front is beginning to look better. I'll know better tomorrow when I hope to have the rear end completed.

In the meantime (note to myself) I MUST stop playing with the front end berfore it resembles mud!
