"Drawing Again! . . . (WIP)"

This is a new portrait that I finally got some time to get started on. As I've said before, I am intimidated by hair, but I have been inspired by the many artists in this forum who do it so well. This is where I am so far. Please feel free to criticize, comment, etc. I have included the original photo and a detail as well . . .

Bill

Hello Bill,
I'm new to this forum, but from what I'm looking at you have a good handle on the techniques of hair. It looks really fine almost touchable.
I'm envious that I'm not that advanced. Do you leave the highlights out or do you erase to create them?

Steve

Bill,
The hair is looking very realistic, I'm looking forward to your posts!

That hair looks fantastic! What paper are you using and if its bristol board what pencils are you using for the darks? Also did you use any blending on the hair? I know ..alot of questions, but I'm very impressed and I'm here to learn if you don't mind sharing

That is really great hair, it looks as though you're really taking your time to get it right, and it's working. I was wondering, and i know the rest of the drawing was just the initial sketch and it'll probably change when you actually get to rendering it, but her teeth look like thay may be standing out too much, a little too large. Not meaning to be picky, just my 2 cents Can't wait for the next installment this is going really well.

Geez, Bill - I'm not sure what you're worried about, this is great stuff! Your hair is dead on... what kind of pencil do you use? Paper? I personally use a smooth bristol, and Ebony Black exclusively. Can't wait to see the next installment!

Thanks so much for all the wonderful comments. I think I'll just stop right now and call it finished! (just kidding . . . this is a Christmas present) In answer to your questions:

This is my first attempt at detailed hair. Before this I really didn't put much work into hair, and it was the LAST thing I did. I got my inspiration for attempting this level of detail from this forum . . . thanks to Marc, MHK, Shelby, and portraitartist2002 among others.

This drawing is on low grade smooth Bristol. I used HB lead primarily with 2B added in the darker areas. My primary technique was multiple layers, with selective blending (stump) and picking out highlights (sticky kneaded rubber) in between each application of graphite. I also used alot of negative drawing in the darker areas, with a few lines inscribed (blunt end of needle) for the few "wild" hairs. I think the depth was achieved with the many layers applied, but I think I got dangerously close to over-working some areas (maybe too close).

It might be a good idea to leave the hair for last. I just read in J. D. Hillberry's book not to start the hair until the face was finished. I didn't read that until just recently, so I started the hair before the face in my Princess Diana drawing. I'm sure it'll still work, though, if we're careful.
