"Just a boy"

Hi. Heres one of my weird looking relatives again (what a surprise..) The hair was quite a challenge to me, I havent drawn hair like this ever. I even had to use some 9B... The most important thing to me was getting the ears rendered the way I wanted, for a some reason ears have always been difficult to me.

This is a wip yet, I think the shirt needs some pencilwork if Ive got time for that... By the way, its funny that the eyes in the jpeg are not totally in balance, but in the actual drawing they are... weird..

Ref. 5x8, drawing time 10h

Feel free to comment anything if you wish. thanks

MHK...
It looks awesome! The mouth looks especially good with the way you caught the light hitting the upper lip. Really makes it pop off the page. And you did a great job on the hair, it looks like it could actually move if the wind passed over it.

Can't wait to see more!

Nice job MHK!! I also agree on the hair, it looks great. Can you give some tips on how you achieve hair that detailed? I'm still trying to figure it out and would appreciate some helpful hints..

The keyword here is "tonality". My ultimate goal is to match tonality with the reference. So when I adjust the contrast of the drawing in the photoshop back and forth the grayscale goes the same way as on the reference.

As the tones are about semi-balanced, the next thing is to start making details. I used mechanical pencil (0,5mm, 2B). I also used HB pencil to the lines on the top of 9B to get "slick" appearance to the hairs

I also tried to use "negative" drawing on the highlite area to make some shadows darker than the hairs.

The hair is not perfect, but since I put only about 2hours on it I have to be happy with the result

The drawing size is 8x11 as usually.

I think you are being very modest. The hair looks very real!!

when you start drawing the hair.. Do you start with the direction the hair is growing (in this case from the top of his head downward) and use one continuous stroke or do you shade the dark areas first then work from there? I included 2 examples.. first one I'm wondering if your using one continuous line then going back and adjusting the tonality? 2nd one I'm wondering if your just filling in the solid tones then working off of that?

theduke: I dont use continuous strokes. I use pencil very quickly, add something here and something there... I cannot explain it very accurately. The strokes are approximately an inch long each, I dont always know even myself if I am drawing "negative" or regularly... But basically I just make the tones correct first (starting with dark areas), then I start to do more lines... But as I said, I work very fast, switch on to another pencil every 10seconds or so, not even knowing what I am doing.. I stand up every 5minutes, watch outside the window, have a cup of coffee or do something else, like checking out artpapa“s new messages...

And finally in the end, I see everythings about the way they should be. Then I add some details and "sharpen" things.

I bet nobody would understand the way I work, at least if I tried to explain it any further... basically its all about intuition I guess, still keeping things under control.

man oh man!thats great....MHK you shock me each time you make something new,...i feel like the duke ,..only im more curious about the skin....there is no way i can blend skin tones that smooth.....are you applying it with pencil...and then blending?...or are you using tissue or something to apply it? whatever you are doing is working exellent.

Abso: Thank you. I have noticed that the paper, derwent pencils and these Nessu-tissues I currently use do blend extremely well together, even when I use "excessive" force. Theres no secret, just a damn good combo.
