"Some of my drawing"

Hey, new to this forum, some of the stuff ive seen on here is amazing, and consider it a priviledge to other artists critic my work, a little about myself; i'm currently a junior in high school, 17, been drawing since i could remember and have always loved it, its only been within the last few years that i can actually start a drawing and finish it, normally i would get so fed up i would through it away; i know this stuff isnt as good as some of the stuff on here, any comments would be great, hope to hear from ya.

The pic. on this message is a pic of Jimi Hendrix, not quite finished, the hair needs some work, but it gives you an idea what i can do, and what i need to work on

At 17, you are WAY ahead of the curve. I knew this was Jimi the second I saw it. (I saw him at Berkeley in the late 60s)

(edit)
Wow, I just saw your "source" pic. You are not copying by rubbing and transfer from the photo? Oh, my goodness! That's very, very good "seeing" ability. You'll go very far with this talent, I'm sure.

Wow, those are all very good! The one of Jimi Hendrex and the wolf are especially good, I think. I like your style--they are somewhat cubist/angular looking and half painterly, but realistic, too. In the Jimi Hendrex drawing, the eyes look too light compared to the photo. Keep drawing; you're doing great!

No sweat Talon. You're just good that's all. Especially at your age! I do have one suggestion. Do print outs of the photo, or scans, and rub the back of the paper with pencil. Turn it over and tape it down on your drawing surface and trace the very most prominent shapes of the features. Then finish it out as per usual. All the pros do it like that. You will LOVE the results. And don't let anyone tell you it's "cheating". It's not. It's just a tool to help get the proportions more exact. Your own techniques will ultimately come out in the end product.

Have fun!

I don't know if "all the pros" do it like that... It seems like cheating, but I guess it's not. I have just begun using a grid, and some people think that's cheating.
Anyway, you are very good for your age, talon, and welcome to the forum!

thanks for the comments, the eyes on jimi are lighter than the photo, i was wanting to put some detail in the area around the pupil of the eye and the only way i could do that was to make i lighter; actually i have heard of some artists using the technique that geedub suggested, personally ive always eyeballed it, ive tried grid but i got the same results either way, ive never really caught on with those techniques because if you out and drawing stuff from the real world on the spot all you have to work with is your eye, but i guess you could take a photo and work it that way too; i guess thats one of the cool things about art there are almost endless ways to get from a blank page to a finished work, whatever suits your needs i guess; thanks for the comments

Welcome Talon - Your Jimi portrait is very impressive - good luck with his hair! You did Stevie Ray Vaughan's clothing very well, great folds and contrasts! Well done.

You should post your wolf on Mike Sibley's Animal & Wildlife forum, I'm sure you'll get lots of positive comments and input.

Very nice indeed!
