"My latest one (moku)..."

Heres my latest drawing, completed about 10mins ago. I had some serious problems with this one. Some kind of crap was stuck in the Nessu-blending tissue I was using, so a few pretty "scratches" contaminated the surface accidentally. You can see them on the right side of the mouth. I dont know how to get rid of them, any eraser or blue-tack didnt work...

Something more positive about the drawing: I tried to get more real look by using softer pencils. Earlier Ive used mostly HB as the basetone on the skin, now I moved on to try more like 2B. I am happy with the result was achieved. The overall dynamics improved dramatically. Total drawing time decreased (Derwent pencils seemed to work and blend better together when excluding hard pencils, HB or harder).

Total drawing time 7hours. Size 8x11. Reference picture 2x3.

Comments. Thanks.

I thought about showing you the whole idea..

Heres some details. Actually I dont mind about these minor scratches but Itd be nice if someone knows how to get rid of them.. I think its nothing to do with grease, but could be graphite/ink/whatever

I have no idea of how to get rid of them, and i know it's frustrating, but it kind of adds character . Where is the source from? I can't believe u can produce such a piece of work in only 7 hrs, I'm very impressed. You certainly have a knack for this

Thanks triton and jess. Luckily on the skin those scratches look more like scars or something. But if they were on the eyes for example itd be hard to imagine they were scars

The source is is a photo from years ago (since ww II), very blurred and aged, so I had to imagine many lost details up again. Its a picture of soldier of Finnish army, the army which fought against Soviet Union with outstanding success.

Triton Ive drawn "seriously" since beginning of september this year. But I drew a lot when I was a small kid (not so many years ago) so pencils are familiar to me

Got a reference? I'm thinking the shadows around the collar should be darker so that his face stands out more. Other than that it's pretty good.

Theduke: my scanner seems to like lines a lot , so they appear to be more visible than in the actual drawing. I am not into very dark tones, some 4B has been used a little here, and if used more in the collar for example, itd make the surface too "slick" and messy. The reference picture is kind of "gray", so I thought itd look more authentic if the drawings also "gray". And by the way, I dont know if its a good idea to make the drawing "better" than the reference picture, since this soldier is unknown to me and the client happens to be his former wife who surely knows exactly how this man should look like. So I let it be "gray".

Thanks for the comment duke.

One possible reason for those scratches is that paper has some defect, at least cheaper qualitys sometimes have some nasty surprises. Another possibility is moisture, I´ve done some "spitting images" by blowing eraser remains off the paper...
in those cases I don´t know if there is any way to remove the marks .
Sinun kirjeesi tuli minulle kokonaisena.)

JL: Joo tuo artboxx on hajalla nyt totaalisesti vuoden loppuun asti. Harmi että siellä on mahdollisesti uusia tilauksia, jotka menee nyt ihan vituiksi. Laita ikivanhaan ossuuni mase@the-police.com tulemaan postia.

JL: I believe it could be something to do with moisture, my window was wide open little earlier and maybe the paper sucked in some water.. Or maybe Nessu sucked in some moisture and mixed it with graphite. The paper I use is Paperipiste´s basic drawing paper, which Ive found very good in blending. There havent been any problems ever.

Nice job on this drawing MHK. You seem to have a knack for drawing portraiture. I find it difficult sometimes to keep the paper totally free of some kind of unwanted mark.

Great drawing! Not only have you created a lifelike portrait, you have done it while retaining the tone of an old photograph. Even the uniform looks real. You really nailed it.
