Wow . . . I've never seen ANYTHING like that before. That is absolutely amazing. Talk about using charcoal in it's purest form! How long did it take you to do that?

thanks bill...i started on it sat,...and about 4 hours sinse then...i traced the eyes this time, cause i tried drawing the same picture before and i was still worried about doing it again,...but the photo is huge...you almost cant miss,..im scared to move on cause its hard to get small detail with a burner,.things like tiny eyelashes and stuff like that are really hard to do so i grinded a tip down a little

ok she is about as done as she gets,..there was actually more detail in the photo of her dress but it was really fine detail and i didnt think i could do it much justice without making it look confusing,...counting today this took about 15 hours...its odd shaped around 9x10 ,the scanner is reflecting back stuff that is too black

great job dude.. Do you go back with white pencil or something to bring out highlites? I would love to give this a try so any pointers would be greatly appreciated. What do you pay for a descent wood burner and where is a good place to find one?

That is amazing. I did a few wood burnings in high school but nothing like that. You are very talented.

hey thank you guys a lot ......i still dont have an expensive burner yet,...probably never will....i made a few scans to show how i burn a little,i use white chalk along with it,..ive only been doing that about 2 years off and on..so the chalk thing is kind of new.,..
i use to e-mail other people that burn a lot and ask them about shading ,..and they would either never reply...or mainly say "just keep practicing"...so i hope what i say helps a little.
in the scan of the burner is how i hold the burner 90% of the time,....looking down at it ..thats what i see.st added that because the tip is so odd shaped....
.....to do the light shading i scrape the wood...wich is hard to explain without being right there to show you.....so if you have a wood burner...that is the only tip i use.,,,if you have that tip in your burner,,,put some white chalk on the wood,.
..and with that angle pretend you are trying to scrape the chalk off the wood,....over the box in the middle..it shows where i scraped the wood...the next box shows where i used short lines and kept adding them until it made a solid shade like in the box below.......or you can just scrape the wood until it is as dark as you want it to be,....either way works pretty good,...i always draw what im going to burn 1st...just a line drawing,..no shading
....at the top of the second scan is just a white chalk pencil...it makes a lot of contrast on the wood.....basswood is really nice wood......but the kind with the bark around it ...the ovals...are hard to burn on,..the grain runs in a circle...and a lot of the time....they have soft spots that turn black as soon as the burner touches them... ...just about all the other basswood in square plaques works great.,...as long as you can lern to shade lightly...by scraping...or using a light pattern of lines until they blend together.....you can turn any drawing into a woodburning.........i always add the white chalk last......wich is my favorite part,...sort of like a second reverse drawing,......ive experimented with colored pencil...but i only add it as light as i can get away with...after im done....cause i end up with cartoon looking pictures if i try to add too much.......i dont understand color...or painting,...so ill just stick with white chalk i think.

also...after you make your line drawing...just use the burner to shade in the shapes...dont burn in lines, over the pencil lines....it will look a zillion times better.
woodburning isnt really all that much different then drawing...its sort of like charcoal/pencils closest cousin...although charcoal drawing has most likely been around longer then any other art form.
thanks again everyone for stopping in i appreciate it a lot.

i just re-read that...the chalk has nothing to do with burning light areas....i just added that to give you an idea of what i meant by "scraping the wood.........there is only one angle you can hold the burner to do that with...if that makes sense?
