"whats the best way to shade this section"

I'm currently working on a drawing on 18x24 Bristol board, its a drawing of a huge industrial site. the industrial site takes up the bottom half of the page when held horizontally, the top portion is sky. I need a very very smooth light tone for the sky. then i plan on erasing some areas with my kneaded eraser for clouds. the drawing has been done mostly with 7mm and 5mm mechanical pencils, i can shade small areas quite well with these pencils, but i'm having a hard time trying to figure out what the best way would be to get a light tone across a large area.

also, i have another area which i'm having trouble texturing, its also a light toned area which looks almost like its sandblasted.

any help would be greatly appreciated....thanks!!

Hey ZippZopp.
drawing the sky softly shouldn't be to big of a problem, The first step is getting the graphite on the paper. you can brush stroke graphite powder or lightly stroke it with a pencil it's your choice.
The key is what you use to blend. If your looking for a soft sky then blending with a tortillion or felt is out of the question. You should use cotton or a Chamois.(sp) I would use the Chamois, it allows you to blend out all your pencil strokes to nice soft tones. You can pick one up at any art store for little money.

As for the sandblast look, Felt is very nice for adding texture but I find not so effective on Graphite. If you can use an HB Charcoal then try blending with felt and adding little highlight's to the with your Kneaded eraser. If Graphite is the choice you may want to try it with a brush or try drawing with a tortillion. (add some graphite to the tip). In all cases try on a seperate piece before commiting to your piece. Good luck!!
