"Framing query"

I am doing a portrait at the moment that I would like to frame and give to my mum and dad for christmas. Every other time when I've had to frame something it's been in a hurry and often only a temporary situation, so it was just thrown in the nearest frame that fit.
I was curious if any one here knows anything about making mats for in the frame, or buing them cheaply.
Any hints or experiences of framing one's work would be truly helpful.

Jess,
I matt and frame all of my works myself. it is quite easy once you get the hang of it. I am getting that you are not in the States but we have stores (like Aaron Bros.) who do framing, sell art supplies etc. I go buy a huge sheet of acid free board in whatever color I feel works with the piece and then I use a matt cutter to cut it to the frames dimentions. If I work on an 11x14 drawing but the actual drawing is only say 9x10 I cut the center to fit that. I also buy my own glass (UV resistant and non glare) when you lay the glass, then the matt, then the drawing you will need an acid free board on the back. They are held in with framing tacks and then I cover the whole back in acid free paper (usually brown) and then scree in two eye hooks and run a wire across the back. if I can find it I will send you the link to a site on how to frame work your self.

Steph
