"very,very step by step"

i didnt plan on drawing anything today, but i was looking at all the stuff in my folder that i had planned on drawing in arizona and never got around to,then
i seen a scan that i thought would help me explain what im doing a little better.,...i started a post like this before but i dont think i done a very good job of explaining what i was doing ..or why i was doing things a certain way,...
this may end up being a VERY long string cause im going to try to talk about what im doing as much as i draw.
im literally sitting at my pc while i draw this,..and im not going to stress on making everything perfect,(not that i can anyhow ..but anyhow...there really isnt a lot of detail in the photo,...and so far all i have done was graph the photo...wich is 7x10 inches ...with 1/2 inch squares...then i made 1/2 inch squares on a peice of very cheap paper...but not so cheap that it tears up while you shade it...typing paper would even work ....im not sure how this is going to work ..but ill post a lot while i go.......and also im going to talk about my theory of drawing wich is only my own opinion of why i do some things the way i do....and doesnt mean its the right way ..or the only way.
,..also im only going to use a plain NO.2 desk pencil..
so thats where im at so far...the only other thing i can add is that AC/DC dirty deeds is playing in the background.

O.K The very 1st thing i did was look at the photo and find her right eye,..by counting the squares down it came to 6,..then from left to right it came out 6,then i had something i could relate to,,,
...
the line that makes up the right side of her face(your left)was where i started sketching the outline of learger shapes,..i held my pencil underhand so it would make soft lines,..i traveled square by square comparing the direction of my lines to the direction of each line inside that square in the photo.,..normally i would be MUCH more carefull to get the lines to match up better,..in the hair i only outlined where the light hits it the hardest....thats all that shows up in the photo.
also..under her chin...i lightly outlined the cast shadow.
none of these lines were made with the pencil point.they are made more with the side of the pencil cause im holding it underhand....so they erase very easy...one swipe and they are gone.
at this stage..she could easily pass as peter pan,,nothing is set in stone yet....its just very basic lines and forms....the direction and shape of the lines inside the squares has to match up as close as you can with the way they are in the photo.square by square.
i just like doing it that way at 1st cause it makes me feel like i have a lot done...when actually this is only about 1% of the drawing...i added some basic outlines in the lip /nose/and eyes,...and those will have to be looked over VERY VERY close and re-shaped to make sure they are curving and set just like they are in the photo.
thats always what takes the longest....ill have to make some close ups of that tomorrow as i go along some more.

ok ..i started messing with the hair and eyes...there doesnt look like much detail in the hair..but actually there is at least a few hours worth,...cause some areas are just slightly lighter then other parts instead of just solid black,...mainly all i did was cake on graphite to fill in shapes, but i didnt go solid black on everything...i might blend the hair some ,but i dont plan on keeping this drawing so i doubt ill do much more to the hair. ...i should have taken the time to make sure every highlight matched just the way they looked in the photo..
.on her eyes mainly all ive done so far was just look for what was the darkest, and tried to match them shapes with the shapes in the photo..i didnt do much light shading,....each square becomes a new drawing in a way while using a graph,..i use the square around each eye to make a guess on the angles....and instead of drawing eye lashes...i tried to draw the way the blurred shapes of them look in the photo.....im still experimenting with my pencils ,...i have never made a value scale...but i did take a drawing i done a while back and marked up what some pencils looked like in a drawing next to other parts.just so ill know ahead of time how things might look...ill bring that in too

here is the scale...and also...here is her eye, right before i changed it a little..in photos peoples eyes hardly ever look like an eye the way i have pictured in my mind....unless they are an extreme close up.and very clear photo..then you can see all the eye lashes and stuff....90% of the time eyes in a photo are just blurred shapes,...and it takes a while to figure out how they look...you almost have to stare at them a few minuites..stuff thats printed off the computer can usually turn a perfect looking picture ..into a blurry mess.

i started shading part of the face on this one...but the paper has a lot of tooth..sort of like concrete,...and although im just barely touching the paper,..it comes out scanned looking like i threw mud at it from the other side of the room......so this is as far as im going with this drawing..ive changed the resolution a few times..and its still the same thing...it even makes the hair look like it was painted solid black.
.i really feel bad for starting a new string with this drawing ,,cause i did want to finish it..so i could talk more about shading.and also ask questions......when i shade skin tones ..i hold my pencil at the other end and just barely drag it on the paper in small light patterns...and it just barely shows up...until i scaned it...you can see where i put arrows because im shading so light that i didnt think my scanner would even pick it up?...
but anyhow....it would have just been more of the same as i went along...but its nice to know that people can still do some things better then computers,...they only know how to use dots to represent shading,..and there is no way to connect them...thats why some scans at certain sizes can really look like hell.
in my drawing...her hair is no darker then a no.2 pencil....but for some reason ..on this paper..it looks blacker then charcoal?.......i dont know if its the paper...the resolution...or what?...all i know is that im not shading even 1/3 that dark

i started a new drawing ..on different paper thats a little smoother.....and i was wondering if anyone knows of any good tips on scanning pics?.....cause the shading i done under this girls eye is so faint that its almost invisible...but in a scan it comes out looking like i used a black marker? ....so besides a digital camera...is there any way to show a true version of a drawing?

just to explain what im saying a little better....that is a brand new q-tip fresh out of the pack next to my drawing........look at how dark and ugly it looks after being scanned....it pickes up everything...including dust?....my paper is actually ultra white.....after being scanned it looks grey at best?......

there doesnt seem to be in between...either i get to have my paper look as white as it acually is....or i lose all the middle tones...here is a 3rd scan with less resolution

It might require a fairly high qualitly scanner to totally eliminate the problem. My scanner scans one side kind of dark and fuzzy but it's old and not very high tech. Eventually I'll have them professionally scanned.

It looks likes your portraits are great though. I bet the originals are awsome. I'm amazed at how fast you produce them.

HEY thanks shelby....ive tried everything...including putting glass down to pick up the light shading better,....thats works some.and picks up better...but too good...cause then it looks like a drawing under a microscope..and makes the paper look grey?.... ....if i figure out anything that seems to work better ill let ya know.....it probably just the way i have my scanner set or something.
take care.
