"I am seeking input from all you great artists out there."

I am an amuateur artists, dabbling in pencil and colored pencil drawings for a number of years. I am self taught with no formal art education. I recently bought JD Hillber's Drawing Realisitc Textures in Pencil, WOW I am inspired after seeing the wonderful work he does, and the wonderful work on the forum. The peices I have submitted are done in either graphite pencil or berol prismcolor colored pencils on Strathmore bristol 300 series/smooth paper. I am here just to learn, any comments or input would be appreciated thanks. I need un biased comments, the family is partial you know.

This first drawing looks scary. Details are weakly seen (you have blurred it too much some way?) But contrast looks fine in that one. Maybe some of the sharp edges would look better (especially those on the skin) if they were smoother?

I like the bird drawing. It's very nice and crisp and clean, with good detail. The man and bottom lady are quite good, too. The man's face looks a bit askew (his eyes aren't lined up), but maybe that's just the way they were.

The blurred one on the top is your best one. I think that's the style you've got working for you.

The one of the old man is proof positive you *need* to work on perspective.

The one of the woman with the sweater - your darks for the creases in her face and for her cheeks are FAR too dark and too unblended. They look "drawn on".

As for the bird - nice job.

Please take it as the constructive criticism it's meant to be.

I agree with the last posting. The first one is by far the best. It is eerily dramtic and the style is like none other I have seen. If I were you I would get rid of the prismacolors and stick with this style of drawing. Obviously you have talent with this medium. The prismacolor talent is and will still evolve if you really want to go down that road. I only do portraits in powdered graphite and charcoal. NOTHING ELSE. No matter what a potential customer may want. I do paintings and pastels but you will rarely find a face in any of them.

Keep the style of your first drawing, it is far too charasmatic to work in any other style. The bird is good but when you do people go for drawing number one.

Yada yada yada. I talk too much.

Thanks for the input. I really liked the billiard lady. However, I must confess the high contrast style is from the original photograph (not my own). But I drew it because of the high contrast. from the response from yourself and the previous I think I can reproduce this style in some of my own photos for drawing. Thanks again.

You seem to have a few different styles, depending on your subject. I have to disagree with the other posts about the old man. It looks to me that the drawing is not meant to be photo realistic, but a little surrealistic. I find that the "askew" style of it gives it character, makes it very interesting. I myself (try to) go for realism, but I really enjoy viewing other styles as well, especially when an artist is able to use different styles with different pieces. Hope to see more of your work in the future.

Hi,

I am an amateur artist too so I don't feel quite up to giving you an "orientation". However I can tell you that the first of your drawing (although it's difficult to see details in that image) is the one I like better, reallyyyyy better. It's dramatic, it tells a story, it's shocking. The bird is good, yes, but I have seen similar drawings by several artists: it's not new. Now the first one is: if you are able to draw other drawings in that style I think you should at least try and see where it leads you... You have nothing to loose!

And don't hesitate to post here the drawings: I for sure want to know what you are going to draw next!
