11. "RE: my way of attacking a photo."

hello jess...i know i should be adding to my drawing right now but
ive been doing some looking around ,...i know what you mean about graphs, cause i felt exactly the same way before,,..but one time while i was surfing art sites,i clicked on one and i seen a portrait of a face done in pencil and it looked so realistic that it shocked me,,at 1st i thought to myself...man i must be a really lazy artist with no eye for detail,..i was crushed cause his portraits looked so much better then what i could dream of doing,..naturally i thought he was doing them freehand,..but as i took time to read his technique i felt much better, cause he was honest enough to admit that he makes a copy...then adds graphite to the entire backside,..until its like carbon paper...then traces the other side....wich isnt cheating because even inside of a 1 inch square the elevations and light and darks can really change a lot,and it sounds like too much work to me,..i feel like graphing gives me more freedom ...i read a book by boris vallejo, and he explained that he uses tracing paper,to find forms
and shapes,...that also made me feel better,....but a graph is easier to use,...drawing without one to me would feel like taking a walk in the woods without a compass,..<<--not sure is thats how you spell compass,..but anyhow its mainly just a map to me,..and it also is great for deciding how much of your paper its going to take up when you draw something...you could mark off an 8x10,..
.then do the same to your paper and get an exact fit, without having to worry about drawing too big or small.
i have to admit that i have no doubt that you draw better freehand then i do cause ive seen your work,..i cant get that close without using a graph.,as a matter of fact..i assumed you were graphing already...so mainly a graph will just fine tune what you already have.,and give you total control.,..you can spend 2 hours in an area and not have to wonder if you are off.
..well i better get back to my puzzle.
take care
jim

ok ill try this again.,my 1st jpgs didnt come in...but i wanted to show you what i ended up with...and also why i did it this way,
i couldnt get the two photos to look right as one picture, and i ended up making a mess,..for a single subject i never would have started with something this small,..it worked out ok for an 8x10,
in the scan that has the deer in it ,..it looks ok,...but in person it looked cramped up and too busy,..so i sacraficed all of it cause id rather have something simple that doesnt confuse people that look at it,...it looked more like she was standing by a wall that had a painting of a deer on it,....ill try to bring in what i have of them,i should have left it alone around 3;00 but i drank so much coffee i couldnt go to sleep,
ill write this one down to experience and do only try to do what is in a single photo from now on.

here is one more of just her face...one other thing i learned is that this background took too much away from the values in my drawing...it does look much better in the actual drawing...my jpgs get very dark when they are small,..and very light when they are big,..the actual tones of her are somewhere in the middle.

one more thing i almost forgot about...it has nothing to do with my drawing...but i dont know how many people from the old forum remember the highly realistic looking asian girl.done in charcoal..but the person didnt seem to give much info about "their friend" that drew it...i was searching fine art pencil drawings... and it poped up...the web sure is a small place isnt it www.ezportraits.com click on that then i think it is drawings..you will find it... i cant remember who posted it..but we must have inspired their friend to start their own website.

ok..here is an older drawing that i could never fgure out why i didnt like it,.last night i added some 3b to it,..i dont have the photo anymore so i just darkened up the areas that i tried to make dark before, using just a no.2 grey mechanical drawing pencil.,it use to look very mono tone..i wish i would have taken better care of this drawing,
i cant believe how much of a difference a good dark pencil can make.
