"my way of attacking a photo."

before reading this PLEASE keep in mind that this is only how i go about drawing something.

hello everyone, this is one that i started last night,im a HUGE borris vallejo fan,so this is the start of my 1st fantasy drawing,..but i wanted to do more then just show where im at on it,in my last post i picked on lee hammonds book ,and as always i stuck my foot in my mouth and i shouldnt have, cause i noticed a new member likes her book.
but i have a copy of her book because ive seen so much talk about it around the web,and i thought it would have detailed information on shading, and also one review said it showed how to take a profile of a face and draw it looking straight at you,....he fibbed who ever said that.
im not going for a likeness cause the girl in my drawing is going to be so tiny, and i like the pose she is standing in..its a full body ,and she is sexy in an exorcist kind of way.,
i put a penny beside one scan just to give you an idea of how small she is.
i have no doubt that mrs hammond is very nice, but she mainly just says to practice a lot.and i wanted to show how i attack a picture from start to finish, and what i look for..wich also there is as many different ways to draw as there are people..so here goes,...1st is the photo,..in wich i would graph,...then (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)i use a hard pencil that wont leave outlines, and draw the shapes as lightly as i can..to where i can just barely see them, doesnt mater if its hair even,..i just look for shapes 1st,.i work in areas about as small as 4 square centimeters,at a time,..wich is what my squares are in this one...the blue line scan is about what i would start with just a general outline but as close as i can get to the shape of the object,...then i outlined in red the smaller shapes i'd look for(i used photo shop my mouse sticks so i done the best i could)). even as small as the shapes are there is still lights and darks in them,.most of the highlights in the hair are not white, they are shaded with a 4h,they just look white cause they are next to darker shapes, if im not sure how dark something should be,i hold a scrap peice white paper up to the photo, and judge it from there.
also keep in mind that some shapes are so light its easier to shade them with a peice of scrap paper that is just BARELY DIRTY..or use a very hard pencil..any style of shading will work, applying directly with pencil..or by using scrap paper folded with points.,before i write a whole book..ill bring in the stuff i made,,....and if i think of more info from time to time ill keep adding it under this topic,..and also anyone with other info that would be helpfull to me and others ..please feel free to post here,...i more then welcome all the help i can get......one final thing....KNEADED ERASERS are priceless and is the one thing i value most ..even more then my pencils.
it was a long day today so i dont think im going to draw tonight,..im just going to take my dog over and let him play with the neghbors dog,..see ya guys later

Hi Jim,

I was thinking how fast you are without it affecting the quality too.

I think this will be a thread worth watching.

hey thanks you guys !! usually i draw from around 5 0r 6 or so but never past 11;30.,
and i started setting an alarm clock so i dont let the time get away from me cause i looked up one night and it was 1;30 almost .and i had to get back up at 6.but on weekends i really dont have a life out side of drawing...it keeps me out of the bars
and i have to say ,..i only drew about twice a week before i found this forum..now i draw constantly....i think im getting to be a graphite junky.
last night i didnt work on this much but i did look for some stuff that i didnt like ,..like around the corner of her mouth that dent i had,.and i darkened it some.then went a little farther down,,...she isnt very big at all .other then that the only thing i started doing different was the way i went about shading it,..i swear im not trying to brown nose the boss but i looked in his book again before i started this drawing
and i noticed that on page 26 he starts talking about shading textures with one value, but instead of using solid lines i just used a really really tight circle pattern in rows until it all looks flat and smooth but ya have to be carefull not to go to dark as you go along,..cause some spots are just a little darker or lighter,..
im not blending anything,..im mainly using the 4h until i get something that looks really smooth and tight ,..then i look at it closer to see if parts of it change in value any.and then i look for a pencil thats a little darker to get that stuff.,..it always takes me an hour to say what someone else can say in 30 seconds..so i guess all im doing is shading in layers, but not blending....i never had any faith in actual drawing pencils until i found this forum
cause i use to think i already knew everything,.
....i wish they would have had the internet when i was a kid so i could have talked to some people that knew what they were doing cause i sure did punish myself trying to get everything out of just one N0.1# ,.some of the hair is 6b over 4h,it seems to go on smoother ....im going to start on this one again pretty soon...but i want to look around a little 1st.here is where im at ,..doesnt look much differn't but i did work on it some.
i want to put a dragon or something in the background ,after i get her body done, but seeing how i doubt ill find any actual photos of a dragon, and i want it to be all mine,..so im not sure what ill add to it yet.?

absolute,
Thanks for sharing your techniques. I have never used a graph before. I feel kinda uptight just thinking about it., but I reckon I would save myself hours of heartache if I were patient enought to do it .......I like your style, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this drawing takes you.

I'm glad we are keeping you out of the bars! It is probably safer to spend several hours drawing beautiful girls than trying to pick them up in a bar!
You know you are really "in the zone" when you have to set an alarm clock. I read an article one time where they compaired the brain waves of an artist at work, with those of a master yogi in deep medition. They are extremely similar. That is also why drawing is such a good hobby. It's like some sort of mental theropy. I have found that when I draw for many hours at a time (sometimes over 16) I need much less sleep.
Keep up the good work. You have a very refreshing style.

Thank you guys for the reply ..i added more to this that ill show tomorrow,..but while i was drawing it kept bugging me not knowing what im going to add to it ,so i took a break and went looking for some baby deer..or fawns i guess,...i found 2 good poses of them to add to it,...someone like boris vallejo would know how to turn 1/2 of her body into a deer like in midevil looking paintings, but im not that creative yet.,,,....that different state of mind while drawing really is a different world all together,..cause when i draw i almost cant stand anyone watching me,..or around me,
the most i can reply to them is..".ya...yup....ok.....sure....yes"...but i really dont pay attention to what they are saying..i just pretend like im listening to them
but my dog doesnt play that game he will make it very clear when he needs to go outside..and his bark is louder then a shotgun..
see ya

once again id like to thank you guys for encouraging me to continue with this drawing,...i finished a little more of her,and i started doing an outline of the fawn,...its at an ugly duckling stage right now,..normally i dont add that much in one shot,(as far as lines)but it helps me explain what im trying to say better.,..i stayed up for about an hour longer then i usually do last night.,..but notice on the deers ear,..i just looked for a shape, and then started to build around it some....have you ever heard the saying..if all else fails read the directions?.
..well thats what i did in a way cause ive had mr hillberys book for a long time ,but i didnt practice making small tight patterns to shade with,or try to build my shadows in stages,..so this is kind of a new thing for me,and im very happy with the added strenth it gives my shading,
but looking is still the hardest part,...sometimes things that are right in front of me are extremely hard to draw the way they actually are,...its hard to explain,..but its alsmost like im trying to tell myself that its ok to put my hand on a hot burner,..the other side of my brain is saying....dont do it that way .
but photographs are SOOOOOOO tricky...the second you looks at them they trick you into thinking they are actual objects,..instead of just a flat group of shapes that are darker in some areas.
i guess in a way its just a very challenging matching game,
cause when you see an area on the photo graph that is almost pure white,..its hard to not add anything to that part when your mind knows that it is skin/furr,concrete,wood etc...like on the deers ear...one area is almost pure white,..and when i shade that spot,..ill just barely be shading it ,if i touch it at all,..depends on if my hardest pencil is light enough...tonight im going to work on her,..but on the deer im going to try to remember more of the things that runs through my mind when i draw....my glass on the scanner needs dusted off,..this one jpg looks dirty

Jim, this drawing is going to be really great, you have got such a great technique now...
I also found that with a harder pencil layer underneath (my pencils only go to 2H) the other layers go on smoother, which seems to work particularly well for the smooth skin of women.
Although I was originally against the idea of using a grid, seeing it as cheating, one of the threads here changed my mind. I was of the mindset that gridding my work would turn drawing into more of a human photocopier than what I was already doing. However on my current drawing I tried one, with squares about 3cm and I discovered how much work and effort is still required to fill in the blanks and how much a grid can only really work as a guide... so thanx everyone who convinced me because my proportions are already so much better, anyway, enough of my blabbering
You are doing really well, and I can't wait to see more form this thread!
