"Papua New Guinea girl"

Hi there everyone... I just finished this drawing... it was taken by a girl in our church. She went this past January to Papua New Guinea to do missionary work there, and snapped this photo of the girl. When I saw it I immediately wanted to draw it. I have spent about 4-6 hours on this, and used all graphite pencils. I started with a 4H making the initial marks to help me with proportion, and then on to 2H to make the initial values. Then over the whole thing with 2H, adding detail a little bit. Then I went all the way to the 4B and added the final detail to each part. I was trying to communicate the desparation in the eyes... let me know what you guys think... any suggestions, yada yada yada...

Joshua

Joshua that is a stunning portrait! You picked a very powerful image to draw. The expression and the eyes tell so much. Very powerful! Your rendering is magnificent! WOW!!! You should enter this into competitions.. The Artist magazine has a competition coming up, I think deadline is April some time.

Thank you

Hey Donna, thanks so much for the encouraging words. I checked out the artist's competition, and am flattered that you would suggest that. It looks like some stiff competition!! Anyway, I will consider it.

I also have another question for you and whoever else looks at this... What about background?? I don't know what to do with the background. The original obviously has one... so just maybe some opinions about that. Thanks a bunch everyone!!

Joshua

P.S. By the way, the picture of the drawing has a "frisket" flim around it to keep the rest of the paper from getting smudges, and I found after I took it off that it looked great, and did exactly what I wanted... just a little tip there!

P.P.S. One more thing, maybe someone could give me some ideas about how to take pictures of the portrait so that it looks better... the one I posted honestly looks really bad when compared to the original... the paper is actually white!! Thanks...

   Joshua,

this is amazing! I'm particularly impressed by her eyes and especially her hair - that must have taken some working!

I agree with Donna - this is certainly competition worthy!

Joshua - what can I say but WOW!! This is brilliantly rendered - love the eyes and hair. Definitely should be entered into competition.

That's a good idea about the frisket, I bought some a while back and haven't used it yet (keep forgetting that I have it). I personally don't think you need to add any background, the subject speaks for itself.

About taking pictures, digital photos just don't do drawings justice because the paper never looks white and you lose way too much detail. I'm not really sure what other options are out there (except for scanning of course).

Hi, WOW , very nice drawing, it really should be entered in the competition. I don't think it needs a background, looks great the way it is. Keep up the good work!

Joshua, backgrounds and I do not mix!!!! I can't help you there. But when you take the photo you can bring into Photoshop or some other photo image editor and alter the grayscale and contrast levels. That is what most people do.

Good luck and please show us more of your work!

Thank you

Joshua, this is one brilliant piece of art. I love especially the eyes.

I dont know how it appears in the actual drawing but here I find the hair little flat and 2D on the darkest areas. Just an impression I got (I dont know if I see it right), but very great piece anyway!
About background: I like the way it is without.

BTW, Is the paper really this colorful or is it because of the photo?

I am looking forward to see your next drawing

Hey everyone... thanks so much for the great reviews. Also thanks Matti for the instructive criticism. I will look a little more closely and see what I can do to make the darker hair areas a little more 3d. Also, the paper I used is pure white, and remained that way throughout the drawing by use of frisket film over the entire surface of the "non drawing" area. I think I may spend a few more minutes with it, and then enter it in the competition. Thanks a bunch everyone!!

Joshua

Hi Joshua. Great work. It really captures your attention. I'm going to have to try using frisket film. Sounds like a good idea.
I also would leave the background white.

Wendy.
