"My Lion...."

I am a huge fan of all your work...it is so inspiring. Mainly I work in the areas of people and fantasy characters and I nearly always work in pencil. However, I am hugely struck by the beauty of animaly...especially some of the larger cat species so recently I was inspired to move away entirely from what is usual for me and do an oil pastel drawing of a lion.....I would love any comments on my work...good or bad! And suggestions about the best way of using this medium are also welcome....thanks!

The first thing that struck me was just how wonderfully rugged your lion is looking! The energy you've put into this drawing has transferred itself to your subject and reflects its temperament.

If I had to comment on anything (I don't suppose you'd let me get away without a comment? I thought not...) the lion's left eye bothers me. The right eye looks fine (if a little dreamy) but the left eye is not on the same plane. Where one is set back in its socket the other is far too forward. In fact the eyeball itself appears to be elliptical whereas it should match the right eye and be hidden a little behind the bridge of the nose. It's at this point that I have to admit to often having trouble myself with the back eye in a three-quarter pose. It rarely looks right - even in the photos.

But that's a minor quibble. You've captured the feeling of power, which is all that matters. Did you set out with an idea of the characteristics you wanted to convey?

Thank you so much for the comments....I totally see what you mean about the eye. First chance I get I will try to correct it if I can!

I did want to convey the characteristics of the lion....I feel lions have an almost larger than life presence.....I tried to show this by making him fill the page completely (I'm not really sure if this worked but I'm still experimenting and learning!). I also wanted to show his rugged boyish side.

My husband's family originate from Zimbabwe and a visit there a few years ago has filled me with such inspiration....now if only I could find the time to put it all down on paper. I have a dream of drawing being my full time job...we all gotta dream right??

   Dear Lynda,

Love your lion! I like the way you have filled the page completely to show his size

I have a love-hate relationship with pastels - I love the results, but I hate using them! But I really like the free strokes you have used here to emphasize the wild boy nature of the subject.

Have you considered using the occasional contrasting colour (in this case blues or purples) in the shadow areas? Try it on your next piece, it can really make the form JUMP out of page at you.

happy drawing.

Linda,

Thankyou so much for the tips! I have seen your website and I am astounded by your art...it is so beautiful and such an inspiration. I can only hope to produce such amazing work one day. Well, I sure will try....and I'll bear in mind what you said about the contrasting colours. I have always worked in pencil so doing anything in colour is quite new to me.

Thanks again,
