What was it Glenn that first attracted you to this bird? Was there any reason in particular that made you want to draw it?

Everything is as as it should be but, for me, there's something missing. It's a creditable drawing but - this is probably going to sound crazy ...... it's not saying anything.

What was your motivation?

MIKE

That is a good question, but it was a long time ago i draw it, and I have a short memory span.

I can understand what you mean, I look at it sometimes and think it is a bird and?

I think I draw it, just to try and improve my skills at pencil work

   Hi Glenn,
Nice hawk! I think I know why it doesn't "say"anything , when you glance at it, it is a bit flat. It's lacking the 'big form modeling', think of the whole bird as a three dimensional object and work on adding some more darks to make it look more three dimensional. Then I would really study the feather patterns and just get into the details more.

I like the way the claw is just sticking out of the breast feathers. But maybe if you darken around it, make it look like it's 'coming out' of the feathers it'll say more. I would make the beak and the eye darker and crisper, this is the area on birds that is the wonderful contrast to the soft feathers.

I also look at the place where the branch and body of bird meet, it's all the same tone, maybe if you can make the area around the branch darker, you know the birds feathers, it will stand out more.
Hope this is somewhat helpful, and not too long winded!!It's a really good drawing.

Mary

Thanks for the comments, I think that I would have to draw this again, to add in the details you suggested.
This was drawn like I said last year. I had only just started to draw again since I was a child.
I was happy with it at the time, but looking back I can see the failings in the Picture.
Here is a more recent drawing I did of an Owl.
Let me know what you think

   Hi Glenn,
First of all there are no failings in our work, just learning and progressing!
I like your owl too, is this one finished or in progress?
On this one you should think about the composition, the tree on the right is slicing right up through the drawing, maybe you could make a branch above the owl, curving over his head, to frame him. Do you know what I mean? I think it would also be a good drawing to consider some kind of background, why not experiment, try something soft, not so in focus?

His eyes look good, nice and dark and crisp. Remember I commented on the hawk looking flat? On this one if you look at the left side of the owl , the area is all the same tone. I think if you darken to the edges, it will make his form turn(look 3D).

His claws look great, what if you darkened up under some of the feathers to make it look like they hang over the claw more.
You must like birds like me! I actually have a few chickens that I've thought about drawing!

   Hi Me again,
I forgot to suggest to you, look at his beak, it's hard to see, that would look great if you darken it and work the feathers around it, remember it's like doing a portrait, the details around the 'face' are most important, keep em sharp!
Hope I helped,
Mary M

Hi Glenn, I agree with Mary, the drawing is good, you just have to create more tonal differences, use a more varied graphite range from h pencils through to the softest bs, to get stronger lights and darks.

Nature is not something that can be seen by the eye alone- it lies also within the soul, in pictures seen by the inner eye.
