"Just a couple side notes on this drawqing"

sorry to post this here but the other forum is closed today?and on my birthday of all days..i just turned 20 for the 33 rd year in a row!!........i just wanted to explain something that worked pretty good for me on my latest hair do,
it looks like a lot but it really isnt,,,,and obviosly i didnt draw hair with that much detail from a wallet size photo,...i hand picked a very learge photo of her.and done it at size..it took up every bit of an average size sheet of printer paper.....then i graphed it as tight as i could ...mainly just for the eyes then the hair,....in each sectiion i looked for the darkest line that showed direction of wich way it was flowing...just kind of sketcy at 1st...then i used long skinny lines with a mechanical drawing pencil going back and forth folowing that direction as much as i could from one end to the other,....it would take the rest of your life to do it exactly the way the photo is,....so i just done them in general so to speak, then darkened the shadows with the side of a 3b...and last of all..i just erased out the highlights,....
ill scan the photo also here in just a few....i know hair is a real pain in the *** so im still experimenting,....and thought mabye this would be helpfull to someone.
i think for those of you with blue tack this would work better for the highlights...cause it has better pulling power from what ive heard,....i dont know if this would work for all hair cause in smaller pics of it so much is hidden by the shadows.....this is the 1st time ive tried this method and it works pretty good for close ups of hair in full light.
also its important to know this drawing is HUGE....full sheet for just a head shot is prettty big to me.
take care
JIM

Happy birthday Jim!!!

Great idea on the hair! This turned out really nice!

Does anyone know why the drawing forum is always having problems?

Thank you

   musical interlude...

'happy birthday to yooou, happy birthday to you!' trust me, its better to read it than hear me sing it....

anyway, the way you do hair is similar to the way I do fur - except short strokes instead of long lines - then just a bit of shading in with a b, & 2b (I use a 2b, not 3b). I save the 4b or 6b for the very darkest areas that have little or no detail. I use the blu-tac magic to pick up highlights.

Have you tried Mikes method of incising yet?

Well, you know how when you take a motor apart..... then you put it back together..... and you've got some bits left over?

Well, I think Alexei's been tinkering and found he's got a spare nut or two left in the box.

Just guessing. That and high traffic is my guess. I couldn't get in here for a couple of days (and I tried all four of my Internet connections)

Oh, and talking of nuts........ Happy Birthday JIM!

Thanks Jim - that's a good description of a useful technique. The close-up shot is especially useful. It's worked well for you (and for me in the past - I've used something similar for Spaniels ears).

The hair has a good three-dimensional feeling to it and a lot of 'body'.

This spontaneous style of working often pays well. It forces you to take draw your overall feelings for the texture and form instead of getting bogged down in detail.

Linda mentioned my use of incising.... well, I wouldn't use it here with one exception - the stray hair above her left ear. I'd probably incise that so I could forget about it as I drew over it. It's my belief that it's these stray hairs that give an enhanced reality to a piece.

thanks mike/linda!....i have used that method a few times,,but not really enough to notice,...JD also uses the same thing i noticed in his book,..i just havent really found a good tool for doing it yet,...this was a fast fun way of doing long straight hair...but ive looked at other drawings of long hair both people and animals and i think there is a better way of doing it.....just a lot more work.,,,i keep telling myself someday im going to slow down and do a whole picture as slow as i possibly can.....but my evil rushing side always takes over,.
its pretty hair to look at ,..but its a little lee hammond'ish looking
in a way......im starting another one of her from a really strong contrast photo,.
thanks for the happy B-DAYS its kind of boring turning 20 every year but im getting used to it.....in another 10 years ill turn 21!

Happy Birthday Jim!

I'm like you, I don't like to draw hair (probably because I'm in need of improvement in that area, also it demands extra patience!) I have used a similar technique as what you've done here and found it works pretty well.

Love Cindy's locks - looks great!!
